Who wants the #8 pick back? Kuechly?

My stance has been the same since the 2012 draft. He will be an average starting quarterback at best. Right now he's closer to below average and is the 20th best quarterback in the league IMO. Not a bust of Gabbert proportions. But still a bust. Should have took Luke Kuechly. I have posted this in a few other threads but I might as well post it here as well. Here is a scouting report from a long time NFL Scout for the Eagles, Chiefs, Redskins Dan Shonka who now runs www.ourlads.com

What Ourlads' NFL Scouting Services said about RYAN TANNEHILL: Texas A&M, 6037 221 4.65. Started 19 games at quarterback in his career and ran an NFL scripted offense installed by former Packer head coach Mike Sherman. He caught 11 passes for 143 yards before moving over to quarterback at mid-season in 2010. Played under center and also in the shotgun. A right-handed passer with good arm strength and athletic ability. Athletically Tannehill has certain critical factors and position specifics that are holding him back. Book smart but does he process football information quickly at the line of scrimmage or on the run? There were several cases where he could have easily run for a first down and he threw a poor pass or threw the ball away. Consistency was best against weaker opponents. Against Arkansas, Missouri, Oklahoma, Kansas State, Texas, and Oklahoma State his record was 0-6 and he had a 12/12 TD/INT ratio. He averaged 5.7 yards per attempt in three games completing 57% of his passes. His decision making and field vision are in question because of throwing into double coverage and forcing the ball into coverage. He doesn’t seem comfortable in the pocket. Throws best on roll out and sprint out type action. Ball placement has been inconsistent, struggling to put the ball where the receiver doesn’t have to adjust before running. Despite his tall stature his delivery point is low and gets several tipped passes. Must develop quarterback sixth sense in the pocket. He has the athletic tools to play quarterback, but lacks the game time experience of several quarterbacks coming out. He needs to improve on his accuracy, “feel” for the position, decision making, game management, and consistency. As a wide receiver, Tannehill caught 112 passes good for 4th in school history and gained 1596 yards which ranked him 5th on the Aggie all-time list. He also scored 10 receiving touchdowns. He is the only FBS player with 3000 passing yards and 1500 receiving yards to his credit. He also has a 400-yard passing game and a 200-yard receiving game. Grades out as a good backup who may be an eventual starter with developmental time. 2011 stats: 327/531, 3744 passing yds, 61.6%, 29 TDs, 15 INTs. Did not work out at the Combine. Second/third round. (A-32 5/8, H-9, SS-DNP, VJ-DNP).

So many tipped passes. And of course.. the deep ball. The reason why he struggles with those two is the low release point. You become much less accurate the deeper you throw the ball when you have a low delivery point like Tannehill does. Teddy Bridgewater also has the same problem with his release.

The footwork, arm strength, intangibles, quick release (albeit, too low of a release), ability to throw on the run, speed, ability to keep his eye level up under pressure, and anticipation are all good qualities. But the deep ball, the tipped passes (because of the low release point), ability to progress through his reads quickly (play speed), decision making, field vision, accuracy/ball placement, ball security (small hands + he routinely keeps 1 hand on the football), poor in all mental aspects of the game, overall lack of consistency, and the inability to be a clutch performer are just as evident as in these cut-ups as they are now in 2014. A lot of people looked at the 19 starts as a positive showcasing his upside as a prospect. I looked at it as a huge red flag. He hasn't shown any improvement since hitting the NFL.

The Oklahoma highlights were horrendous. There is nothing from that film that would make you think Tannehill is a future NFL QB. Run tape like that of any QB starting at a major college today, and you would not see anything that separates Tannehill.

Just change the uniform to a Dolphins uniform and that could have passed for video of any Dolphins game over the past 2+ years. So disheartening.

I said it at the time that Luke was my pick...still want him...

He's an athlete with a strong arm. Not a good starting quarterback.

He looks good against Baylor because they were #118 in pass defense of 120 schools

I really wanted to see how long this guy was going to talk to himself in this thread before any response.

Regardless, Tannehill played 1 1/2 years and a total of 20 games at QB in college. It's well known he would be a developing project in the NFL.

Sorry for breaking the silence... something had to be said

I remember all those games because I had bets on them. One benefit from betting dozens of games every Saturday is you get to know the players who are helping you or costing you. I remember Robert Griffin from his freshman days as a whiny self-absorbed kid who flopped around and had no idea how to protect himself. Then it's unbelievably baffling when somehow the reputations change entering the draft process.

I wanted Luke Keuchly at our spot. I posted that. The Canes hosted Boston College in the season finale that year. In attending Canes games beginning as a young kid in the late '60s, Keuchly was the best opposing defender I've seen. He diagnosed some pass plays in that game that Jacory Harris had feasted on all year. Obviously incredibly well prepared. On one play he cut in front of a short pass and took it the distance for a pick six while stiff arming and dismissing Travis Benjamin en route to the end zone.

We were stuck. The roster demanded a quarterback and Ireland needed to buy time. Unfortunately the second tier options were Tannehill and Weeden. Both had troubling atypical backgrounds, as I emphasized in the draft forums. In terms of a premium pick I'm a big believer that you can't place too much faith in players who have followed a strange path. No trend is 100% reliable but ignoring those false steps will burn you far more often than not. A high pick should be someone who was highly rated in high school, played quickly in college, excelled in college, and has a pro frame and traits for his position. Not complicated. For value picks down the line look for players who shared many of those criteria but were devalued due to overreaction. An example would be Seantrel Henderson.

So he's not a great QB. Philbin is hanging his head coaching career with the guy so its what they have, bad or good. Philbin is not great either but I think I like him better than the Jest coach. Just terrible.
