I took 16 AFC QBs (one for each team) from the 2013 to compare their stats on passes based on distance. For teams with multiple starting QBs I took whoever had more pass attempts. This is what I found:

First off when I do the entire NFL the rankings will be different but it’s just a start. Second for Completion%, TD, Int, ties are factored in.

Ryan Tannehill gets beat up a lot on the deep ball but you can see, passes of 31+ yards he isn’t as bad as it seems even with factoring in he has thrown more 31+ yard passes then anyone in the AFC. Maybe because he throws deep so much it seems like he misses a lot.

The short stuff he excels at. On passes from 1-10 yards he ranks with the better QBs in all stats in this analysis. His Completion % is ranked mid pack but it’s such a small margin. Just 1% below Brady and 1% above Luck. He is 3rd with 13 TD behind Roethlisberger 14 and Manning 25.

Where Tannehill struggles is the medium ranges of 11-20 and 21-30. His Accuracy isn’t bad in the 11-20 range with 2[SUP]nd[/SUP] in completions. It’s his decision making with 9 Int, most in the AFC. It’s vice versa with the 21-30 range. Poor completion %, tied for 14[SUP]th[/SUP]. However he has only 1 Int.

With only 2 games played it's impossible to tell if Tannehill has improved or regressed. Let's just let 2014 play out. I'm sticking with optimism and pulling for Tannehill to succeed!

Starting with the deep ball (Pass Thrown 41+ yds) Ryan Tannehill was:
3rd in Completions
2nd in Attempts
3rd in Yds
Tied for 6th-7th in Completion %, 7 players only had one completion with fewer than 10 attempts
Tied for 2nd-6th (Higher the better) in Td
Tied for 13th-16th (Higher the better) in int, 12 had none, 4 had one

The slightly less deep ball (Pass Thrown 31-40 yds) Ryan Tannehill was:
Tied for 3rd in Completions
1st in Attempts
6th in Yds
9th in Completion %, Keep in mind he was 1st in attempts
Tied for 6th-10th (Higher the better) in Td, 1 had five, 3 had three, 1 had two, 5 had one, 6 had none
Tied for 13th-15th ( Higher the better) in int, 1 had three, 3 had two, 7 had one, 5 had none

Mediun-Long Pass (Pass Thrown 21-30 yds) Ryan Tannehill was:
15th in Completions
Tied for 9th -10th in Attempts
15th in Yds
Tied for 14th -15th in Completion %
Tied for 11th -14th (Higher the better) in Td, 1 had six, 1 had five, 1 had four, 5 had three, 2 had two, 4 had one, 2 had none
Tied for 2nd -6th (Higher the better) in int, 1 had none, 5 had one, 5 had two, 2 had three, 1 had four, 1 had five, 1 had six

Medium Pass (Pass Thrown 11-20 yds) Ryan Tannehill was:
2nd in Completions
1st in Attempts
2nd in Yds
7th in Completion %,
Tied for 9th-11th (Higher the better) in Td
16th (Higher the better) in Int

Short Pass (Pass Thrown 1-10 yds) Ryan Tannehill was:
4th in Completions
4th in Attempts
6th in Yds
8th in Completion %
3rd (Higher the better) in Td
Tied for 8th-10th (Higher the better) in Int

So according to what you compiled, RT is one of the best qbs in the AFC ...which makes me think there's something very wrong with your numbers.

If you actually go back and look strictly at Tannehills dropbacks for the Buffalo game it's not nearly trainwreck it was made out to be in these forums.

For all the time people spend unrealistically bashing T-hill, check it out for yourself. Compliments of Jake McAwful:

Actually go back and watch something? I can't just read stats off of ESPN?

I see a failure to properly place passes as to assist the receiver in catching it in stride and allowing for YAC. Many throws are behind guys or in a spot where they need to extend their bodies to catch the ball.
Holding on to the ball too long, especially when facing a persistent pass rush. No ability to adjust delivery or acceleration of reads. Doesn't appear to have a good feel for oncoming pass rushers around him.
Poor down field passes where he could have lead a receiver to open field or scored.
Poor touch on screen and outlet passes, couple balls completely over thrown to a receiver near the LOS.
Repeatedly getting balls batted at the LOS.
Doesn't do a convincing job selling that option play.

He made some decent throws here and there.
He usually throws a nice comeback route.
He was basically under pressure constantly, bad showing by the o-line.

I honestly do not know what you guys are talking about. This guy is a pretty pedestrian quarterback.

From where I am sitting, it seems to me the Bills defense has gotten even better.

Too much pressure on our QB consistently. Albert I know wasn't happy with his game.

There in lies one problem. I disagree with nerfball.

Alex Smith 45-77-457 58% 1 TD 63. 6 rating
Ryan Thill 49-81-419 60.5% 3 TD 2 int 76.1 rating
Matt Ryan 55-87-679 63.2% 4 TD 3 int 88.2 rating (highest ranked QB right now based on yardage)
Nick Foles 48-82-653 58.5% 3TD 2 int 86.1 rating

I disagree with nerfball.

disagree how? all of what I said happened.

you know, what's the saying, everyone's got a plan until they punched in the mouth? that is what this game is about. MAKE AN ADJUSTMENT for christ's sake. Don't just stand there and keep doing the same BS all game and walking off the field. All these things people talk about, football IQ, a feel for the game, etc... that's what they're talking about. He's the QB, the leader of the offense, understand what's happening, what isn't working, adapt, overcome. He hasn't shown this ability.

No I said the Deep ball isn't that bad and he is great with the short game. However where Tannehill struggles is the medium ranges of 11-20 and 21-30. He is poor in this range.

We are not going to win every game nerf. And you might as well chalk up every game in buffalo as a loss. They know how to beat us.

And for all your points you fail to mention dropped balls right in their baskets. Clay, Hartline, Gibson, Matthews.

Its not that I necessarily disagree with what you or WV is saying, its that your only point is negative and fail to see the positive in what he is doing well or is dealing with under pressure. The Oline was not as good as week 1. The WR's clearly dropped balls right in their guts/hands.

The coverage for the Bills was very good. They studied us well. The pressure was top notch. Lets give the Bills some credit here. This isn't RT has a serious problem. Its more RT needs more work with these guys in this offense.

The balls that receivers dropped are separate plays than what I am talking about. Those negative plays don't have anything to do with Tannehill's accuracy issues. To say nothing about his inability to adjust to the flow of a game like that. He's a stiff.
