There's a chance Ryan Tannehill could need surgery on his ACL.

The Dolphins quarterback suffered MCL and ACL sprains in last Sunday's 26-23 win over the Cardinals, and his leg was in a cast last night during Saturday's 34-13 victory against the Jets. Tannehill is planning to rest and rehab the partial tears in his knee, but if it doesn't help, ACL reconstruction is possible, a source informed of the situation told NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport.

Tannehill is already "very uncertain" to return this season, per Rapoport, but if he goes through with the surgery, he'll clearly be out for the remainder of this campaign. Backup signal-caller Matt Moore has shined in relief thus far -- he tossed four touchdowns against the Jets.

Ryan Tannehill confirms he has a Grade II MCL sprain

Dolphins quarterback Ryan Tannehill made the trip to New Jersey despite a full cast on his leg and no chance of playing in the win over the Jets. After the game, he confirmed a couple of nuggets reported by a certain Internet hack with whom you may be familiar during the NBC-produced NFL Network pregame show.

First, Tannehill confirmed that he has a Grade II MCL sprain.

It’s not completely all the way off,” Tannehill said, via Jason Lieser of the Palm Beach Post. “It’s categorized as a Grade II, so there’s some integrity left in it.

Second, Tannehill confirmed that he could return for the regular-season finale or a playoff game. (Last night, said Internet hack reported that the earliest Tannehill could be back is Week 17.)

Obviously I’m hoping,” Tannehill said. “I don’t really know what’s going to happen at this point. No one knows. It’s all really about how my body responds. We’ll come to find out shortly, but right now we don’t really know.

Tannehill was cut off by a Dolphins staffer before he could answer the question of whether he needs surgery. As reported last night, surgery is still possible given the fact that he has a slight tear in the ACL.

As NBC Sports Medicine Analyst Mike Ryan explained during a recent visit to PFT Live, ACL tears won’t heal on their own. So Tannehill will either play with a slightly torn ACL, or the ACL will be reconstructed.

saw this last night, not what i was hoping to read after we got news it was only a sprain, and im not even concerned with him possibly returning this year, thats out of the question imo.

If he chooses not to have surgery, it increases the possibility that the MCL could tear again in the future. He may avoid scrambling and be limited with knee braces.
If the injury is moderate, and surgery gives him the best chance to resume his career at full strength, I hope he gets it done.

As much as I'd love to see him back on the field this year I would encourage him to think long term and get the surgery. Considering it's a partial tear I would think there's still a chance we get him back in time for the end of TC. Either way he knows this offense and has much improved chemistry with the guys in the huddle so as long as the injury doesn't affect the psychological side of playing (and I think we can all agree that he is one tough mofo) he should be ready to step back into the huddle before week 1 and lead this team again.

That is simply not true. Not having the surgery does not increase the possibility of tearing it again. If that were the case, his doctors would require that he get it surgically repaired.

'If the torn ligament does not heal sufficiently, you may experience instability in the joint, and you will be more susceptible to re-injury. The MCL usually responds very well to non-surgical treatment, although surgery may be required in rare cases. Depending on the severity of the injury, a period of rest, bracing and physical therapy usually is sufficient to heal the tear.'

its the partial acl tear thats most concerning to me, the mcl is almost a non issue imo

Just get the surgery at this point. The sooner the better

After reading all the stuff last week I went from "great" news no surgery to its still a possibility to -he probably will have the surgery for the ACL.

Ryan graduated Pre Med and aspires to become an orthopedic surgeon after football. He is really smart and probably understands the risk vs reward better than anyone. A grade 2 partial tear is better than grade 3, where he would definitely need the surgery. I wouldn't rush to the surgery solution. Let's see how it responds before rushing for the scalpel.

The question becomes... when? Will he try to comback if we make the playoffs and get the surgery afterwards? One way to look at it is would you rather miss the end of the 2016 season/playoffs or the beginning of the 2017 season... Given that we have a capable backup in more, we could get by with him for the first 4-6 games of next season... though decision...
