I'd like to keep this thread only on the topic of Tannehill's leadership qualities and not about his game play. There are many other threads about his game play to post those thoughts in. Has tannehill ever taken blame for anything? Every time I see his post game topics, it's always WE need to do better and never I need to do better. We need to block better, receivers need to get open and yeah and I can play a little better too. Shouldn't a leader fall on his shield, even if in his heart he doesn't believe it? I bring this up because a couple days on the profoltballtalk front page I saw two different articles. One was tanny talking about how the cuts send a message that if you underperform you will be let go. He continued to throw others under the bus and in typical tanny fashion, said oh yeah well I need to get a little better too, but it's so hard when you can't get through your progressions and have people in your face before you finish your drop back. Is that how a leader talks? The other article was Andrew luck taking blame for all the sacks and saying he holds on to the ball too long. Don't blame the line, blame me he said. That sounds like a leader to me. Also, we never see tanny rallying the players and often see Jarvis Landry visibly upset with him, although never confronting him. He talked down to the practice squad players last year. Can anyone name me one time when tannehill has truly exhibited leadership qualities? I can't think of any. Oh and please don't bring up Peyton manning calling out his blockers. He had already established himself as one of the greatest qb's and leaders of all time by that point. Tanny is not quite there yet.

I was reading some stuff from Martellus Bennett yesterday and what he was saying, seems to ring true to what we have going on here. Here is some of what was said:

“We just lacked leadership,” Bennett said during ESPN’s E:60 story, The Brothers Bennett, that aired Wednesday night. “They had leaders that looked like the way they wanted leaders to look. You can’t appoint leaders, because some people that you want to be a leader is not the guy that’s the leader and everyone in the locker room knows that this is not the leader. But this is what you want the face of the team to look like.”
Bennett was specifically asked if Chicago quarterback and captain Jay Cutler was a leader.
“He was to the coaches who said he was a leader and the captain,” he responded. “I voted for myself, so I don’t know who voted from him.”

I dont think the players on this team believe RT is the leader, but like in Chicago with Cutler, RT is being propped up as one by the organization. Just my $.02

I have often questioned his leadership and his ability to become a vocal leader of the team. I am led to believe that the previous coaching regime had him "neutered" to a point where he was hung out to dry among his teammates and now he is a little reluctant to step up and be a true leader. However weak it may be, this is a possibility.

Under normal circumstances, the QB is the natural leader of the offense and is their biggest cheerleader when things go right and butt-chewer when they don't. Whether it is public or private, these things need to be done. As you mentioned, a good leader will also be there to take the blame and deflect the credit when it is earned. Hopefully this team is developing some sort of chemistry so we can see this come to fruition over the remainder of the season.

Something that hasn't been mentioned is that we don't have anyone on the defense filling the leadership void either. You would think that Jones, Suh or Wake would be the obvious choice but is there anyone?

Bennett also said....

"Tannehill was the best athlete at our school," Bennett said, according to ESPN.com. "Better than Von (Miller). Better than me. My brother (Patriots tight end Martellus Bennett) would argue that, but Tannehill was one of the best athletes I've even seen. He ran a 4.4. He could do every type of dunk. He was just cool. He was just a smooth, cool guy.

"I've always liked Tannehill. I like him. He went to the same school as me. I'm not going to like him on Sunday. That's a whole different story. I like him as a guy. He was always a good guy to me."

People will hear what they want to hear. Dissect it. Analyze it. Twist it...and use it for whatever.

Nobody is going to say Tannehill is a leader until this team starts winning because he is solely responsible for wins. Right or wrong (it's wrong) that's the way it is.

I have no issues about how Tannehill has carried himself in public. He has been a professional. I've heard him time and again say that HE needs to play better.

"talked down to PS players" = talked smack....Oh well.

Jarvis Landry is now "visibly upset" with Tannehill.....give me a break.

Guess what? We had Zach Thomas and Jason Taylor and all everyone talked about was how we had no leadership on defense....and it was always after several losses.

Can anyone name me one time when tannehill has truly exhibited leadership qualities?

Can you name ANY players that have exhibited leadership qualities? Coaches other than Dan Campbell for two games?

Tannehill has become Chad Henne part 2. Neither are/were leaders. The last QB we had to display ANY leadership was Chad Pennington. Remember the ovation he got in the locker room after we won our 11th game in Chad's first year here? How often do you see a team do that for a QB?

This is a thread of opinion and conjecture. There are quotes from various players saying he has become a leader and quotes from writers saying he isn't. Both sides can present quotes and, to make matters worse, there's no stat on it. And there are various types of leaders. Not all leaders have to be a Ray Lewis. I think he's become more of a leader There are quotes by a number of players stating the "play better or be gone" philosophy. IMO, that has nothing to do with leadership. Statement of fact. I grimaced at the "but it's so hard" comment. Should have left it alone.

I can name 6 QBs in our history that I would consider real leaders:

Griese
Morrall
Strock
Marino
Fiedler
Pennington

Just about everyone else was either in it for themselves or crumbled under pressure.

Tannehill will never get an ovation like that. We are never winning that many games or making playoffs with tannehill. You can count on that.

Unfortunately he doesn't lead like an NFL QB should. Nice kid, smart, but he needs that drive and ****iness that goes along with being a great leader ala Marino, Favre, P. Manning etc.

I dont think the players on this team believe RT is the leader,

I guess that's why when Tannehills mauled NO ONE even offers a hand to lift him up
that chit would stop so damn fast if I was the coach

He holds himself accountable in his pressers. Just yesterday he said there were some sacks/pressures where he could have done more to buy time. He uses the "starting with me" thing countless times.

A QB falls on the shield no matter what. They get all the credit and all the blame regardless of where the dysfunction lies. In this case literally the whole offensive unit is clearly not playing up to par. So of course he will say "we".

You know, that whole "team" thing..

I guess that it was the lockerroom attendants who voted him a "captain" for the 2nd season running :idk:

The only good thing this front office has done is disguise Tannehill as a franchise quarterback.

I think a big mistake we've made over the years is keeping Matt Moore around. This is the veteran Tannehill has had to look up to, the one that he can use as an example for leadership. I don't know Tanny personally of course, but he comes over as a fairly laid back kind of guy. Moore is known to be and portrays himself as almost horizontal in his laid backness :) I'm not sure this is the best influence on the young man. For me from a leadership perspective Tannehill is not displaying any of the signs you want to see.

Who's his competition? The receivers are all young and new. Tight ends are new or young and don't have much production. O line are mostly young and terrible. Pouncey? Lol. Albert is hurt all the time. Backs are all young or new. Who else could legitimately be offensive captain?
