Oh the life of a backup QB. There is always a disgruntled fan that is ready to have you go in and save the day. You can always be the possible solution but may never really have to prove it. Most backups are essential high priced insurance policies. If you lose your starter for 4 weeks the theory is the backup should be able to go 2-2 and keep the season alive. Of course it all depends on who you are backing up. If the starter is durable, then chances are you wont sniff the field and it is easy money. Case in point. Matt Moore.
When the 2014 season ends Matt Moore will have earned $11.5 Million over the last 3 years. In that time he has not started a football game due to the durabilty of RT17. He has played in 5 games and thrown 29 passes. He has thrown 1 TD pass. 11.5 million per TD, nice. To be fair to Moore, He did play well in 12 starts prior to that when he earned $2.75 Million. So a total of $14.2 Million over 4 season for 17 TD passes. Not a bad deal.
Contrast that to Ryan Tannehill over the same period. RT17 has only earned $10.5 million by seasons end. In that time he led almost 100 TD drives for the Dolphins and only missed a few quarters of play. He has endured 127 sacks and the ire of certain fans. And in that time made less than Matt Moore.
Seniority pays, and being a backup behind the right QB can be quite lucrative.
RT17 is under contract for only $2M next year so after 4 years he will stll have made less than Matt Moore over his current 4 years. Of course when the 5th year comes for RT17 he will be able to cash in for much more.
