It's being discussed on Twitter, our buddy James Walker is the ring leader, so I thought I'd bring it in here. The debate "is Alex Smith Tannehill's ceiling?" I think Smith is pretty good but I've certainly been hoping Tannehill would be better. I will say I really wish Tanny could use his athleticism as well as Smith. He's very good at it. I felt Smith was lousy in the red zone today but it seems Kelce is his only option. What do folks think, is efficient Alex Smith Tannehill's ceiling?

I saw the discussion. I really like Alex Smith as a QB, but in his 4 years in the NFL I've seen Ryan make throws that Smith can't even make in his dreams. He is a much refined QB, and i hope Ryan can mature like Smith has, but Ryan is far more talented than Smith. I think Ryan is capable of putting up Cam Newton like Passing numbers but not as lethal in the run game.

Guys,

Ryan Tannehill is a much, much better QB than Alex Smith. It took Alex Smith almost 7 years to get "it." You know what "it" is? COACHING!!!! Alex's last 2 coaches get the absolute best out of their QBs. When was the last time this team had adequate coaching, let alone a coaching advantage even within our own division?

Alex Smith's ceiling is Chad Pennington, I think. He is a good and efficient QB, but what happened today will always happen to him. He just can't take over a game like other QBs can, and truly elite teams will always come out on top. The Chiefs will remain competitive while he is there, but won't ever be championship caliber.

Ryan Tannehill is Ryan Tannehill's ceiling. All other comparisons are pointless.

Maybe but he really doesn't have very good WR's around him. Especially with Macklin out. Not much to work with for him.

The thing about Alex Smith is that he has a higher ceiling than Alex Smith, by which I mean he has the arm strength and the accuracy and the intelligence to be better than he is. But he just isn't. Eventually coaches have realized his limitations and coached to them.

Ring a bell? Tannehill's got all the ability in the world, too. Like Smith, he's tall and athletic and accurate and has arm strength. There are "flashes". Everyone loves flashes. But in the aggregate something's been missing. Ryan's fans want you to believe it's everyone's fault but his. Terrible coaching (that changes year to year), bad receivers, bad OL. Smith's backers in San Fran said the same things I assure you. I think we all know what history will say.

That being said, I do think Tannehill is a better quarterback than Smith and will prove himself better over the long haul. But only a homer would ignore the similarities: a general tendency to play it safe. Inconsistent decision making leading to streaky play. Mediocre ability to improvise. Takes too many sacks. Ignoring these things doesn't make Tannehill any better. Admitting them doesn't make him worse. It just it what it is.

Neither is capable of ever making the throw Aaron Rogers just made to send it to overtime. Holy ****!!!!

Alex Smith sucked big time for a long time and finally figured it out, like a lot of guys. We will see what Gase can do with Tannehill. Will the offense still be queasy and set up for horizontal 3 yard screens and low percentage fades? We will see.

Ryan will be much better than Smith when he's at the same number of years and is better already. He already has 10+% more yards through the air with way more yards overall and way less YAC. Not to mention he's had three of four years with more pass TDs than Smith's had in any year of his whole career. He's a rich man's Smith right now, much less when he's at the same # of years. The only thing Smith is good at now is managing the game and using his legs, but Smith didn't do that until 8+ years in the league.

I guess ryan tannehill vs brian hoyer was too much of a reach
