Here's a video of every throw against Northwestern in Texas A&M's bowl game. Personally, I don't see the hype. He seems heavy footed, not much pocket awareness, seems inaccurate and not the strongest arm. His receivers definitely didn't help him by dropping so many balls but overall I was not too impressed. Only good thing I saw from this 1 game sample was that he seemed to be clutch on 3rd downs.

Also to note, if this is Mike Sherman's offense (I don't know if Sherman was gone by this point?), it was pretty pathetic with an abundance of screens to RBs and WRs.

His arm strength and pocket presence are very much strong points in his game. I would like for you to point out the instances where Ryan showed a lack of pocket presence, arm strength, and heavy footedness from that film.

Here's a couple of links for you.

Those stills are in sequence and shows excellent ability to feel the pressure, move away from the pressure, reset, see the field, and complete the pass. When I first started evaluating Ryan Tannehill, I went in with a skeptical eye because I thought going in that Ryan was going to be just another run oriented quarterback. I was dead wrong. This guy has an unbelievable feel for the pocket considering that he has only started 19 games at quarterback and was Texas A&M's BEST wide receiver during his first two years. I will post the other link in the next post.

Another great example of his pocket presence, ability to feel the rush, step up, and deliever a strong, accurate throw. The pass was thrown with him going to his left. This is a right handed quarterback throwing on the move to his left, across his body. The ball travels 22 yards in the air, gets there, and is put in a spot where the receiver can gain yards after the catch. Here are the endzone views of the play so you can see what Ryan was seeing.

Did we see the same video? I thought, for the most part, he showed considerably good pocket awareness and looked accurate on a lot of nice throws. There were a number of plays there where he was escaping pressure nicely. That early sack on a blitz was not his fault, nobody picked the guy up at all. Ohter times he did a nice job picking up the blitz or getting rid of the ball to avoid a sack.
His footwork looks pretty good and he shows he is not scared to hang in there and take a hit before completing a nice throw.
I really like the play at the 4:54 mark where he gets a quick run fake and then just zips it down-field, accurately to his WR.
Now there were a few bonehead plays, one that should have been a INT, one that was due to a slightly underthrown ball, and others that were slightly overthrown, but nothing that makes you go "this guy sucks."
And you're right, the WRs dropped a lot of nicely thrown balls, and there was an abundance of screens, but they seemed to be working so why not keep at it.

In conclusion, I saw him make a lot of pro throws on this video and he just looks like a professional in the pocket. What makes this more impressive than it would be maybe for other guys tape, is just how little experience he has and how darn good he looks already considering. I think the key with him is HUGE potential. Probably even helps that he understands the WR position well too having excelled there as well. I don't have issues with his accuracy really and he seems to throw pretty good on the run too. He has a lot of improvements to make, but it appears to be all stuff that will come in time with more experience and good coaching. It's cliche, but I think the sky is the limit with this guy for those willing to put in the work with him and be patient. I would not hate it at all if he ended up a phin.

??? Did we watch the same video? Where was this poor pocket awareness? I remember one sack and the pressure came right up the middle. Weak arm? Heavy footed? I think you need to go back and watch your video again

Anyone have his overall stats on 3rd down and in the 4th quarter?

I really liked his pocket awareness and footwork. The kid is also really bright and seems competitive. The throw at 4:11 was a beauty. He hung in the pocket and threw it with accuracy and good ball placement.

Negatives to me are that his arm strength is mediocre and his spotty accuracy at times--I see some inconsistency. Also, on throws where he really had to drive the ball, receivers had to wait for the ball. I'd like to see better ball placement so the receivers can optimize YAC as well. If you look at his games against really good competition, he threw alot of picks which is a concern. However, he may be like Matt Ryan in the sense that he didn't have much to work with in college and could be a better pro. He also needs experience.

Overall, he is an intriguing prospect. I am warming up to him. The good news is that Philbin worked with Flynn and Sherman likewise worked with Tannehill. They have plenty of time to discuss with lots of inside information to make the best decision for the franchise.

Lots of people say he doesn't get past Seattle, so Miami may need to just take him at 8/9 if he's their guy.

Sherman was gone by the bowl game. That was the interim coach, and the new coach was in the stadium talking to A&M big wigs.

Great analysts KB21!

Tannehill could be a sleeper pick. What round is he forecast to go?

Some have him going to Washington at #6 overall. Others say he is a 2nd round prospect. I liked him at first, but I dont feel he can be an impact player within the next few years in the NFL. He's gonna take some time imo.

He’s this year’s Jake Locker. I would be surprised if he’s not drafted in the first.

Honestly I just dont see trading back for this guy. I would rather keep Matt as starter, or go with Lynn. This kid just dont do it for me, expecially what iveseening Luck and RG3.

agreed. theres nothing special about this kid. he doesn't lead his receivers either.

I'd say he's more like Ponder, if only because Locker was a stud through his UW career, really a game proven skill set. Locker would probably have gone top 3 if he came out a year earlier, but slid with a season marred by a lack of supporting cast.

I'm having a tough time justifying any QB after the top 2. Next season there should be at least 4 quality QBs in the draft. I think we trade down, go with best player available at each position, and run Henne or Moore for a year.
