Plays like these can’t continue in Sherman’s offense. Not only will it increasingly become more difficult to keep the offense moving if it’s predicated on mainly outside-breaking routes, it’ll also make it harder for Tannehill to become the quarterback he was drafted to be. He needs to have patience and timing within his progression reads. It’s still integral in Sherman’s West Coast Offense, even if it has been modified from years past.

“The timing and the rhythm of the play is so important,” Sherman said last year when discussing the kind of quarterback that fits his system. ”In the West Coast offense, tempo and rhythm is very important — one, two, three. One, two, three. We time the drops. With [Brett] Favre for six years we timed his drops to see where he is in his time from point A to point B.

“Other things in the West Coast offense is you like to have a quarterback who is able to make a good decision, have a quick release, get the ball out as he goes through his progression.”

Ultimately, if Tannehill’s throwing ability in the seam doesn’t improve, the Dolphins will have bigger issues. The offense will completely fall apart, failing to sustain drives and put points on the board. They’ll also start to question whether Tannehill’s the answer to the position that’s haunted them since Dan Marino retired in 1999.

When they drafted Tannehill in the first round (the first time the Dolphins have drafted a quarterback in the first round since Marino in 1983), they anticipated him becoming the face of the franchise. But that will only come once he starts anticipating his receivers in the middle of the field.

The above is consistent with what we see here:

http://espn.go.com/nfl/player/splits/_/id/14876/ryan-Tannehill

...where Ryan Tannehill's QB rating on plays directed to the middle of the field is on average nearly 30 points lower than his QB rating on plays directed elsewhere on the field.

Wondering why you get such different numbers from different sources.

First, here are the OP's stats:

BY PLAY DIRECTION CMP ATT YDS CMP% AVG LNG TD INT SACK RAT
RIGHT SIDE 43 64 472 67.2 7.38 50 1 1 0 87.5 3
LEFT SIDE 36 49 359 73.5 7.33 28 0 1 0 85.3 3
MIDDLE 23 40 294 57.5 7.35 67 2 4 0 57.7 6
LEFT SIDELINE 59 99 681 59.6 6.88 46 6 3 0 88.0 3
RIGHT SIDELINE 62 111 655 55.9 5.90 46 5 2 0 80.7 4

(Not sure why they list zero sacks)

And here is what Sports Illustrated came up with:

Split G Cmp Att Pct Yds Yds/Att TD Int 1st Sck Rtg
Right Side 52 81 64.2 556 6.9 1 2 25 7 78.0
Left Side 51 67 76.1 489 7.3 3 2 26 3 98.4
Middle 21 36 58.3 265 7.4 1 2 12 3 67.5
Left Sideline 46 85 54.1 577 6.8 4 3 29 0 76.5
Right Sideline 54 97 55.7 587 6.1 5 2 34 1 82.3

Big difference between the two. also, notice with SI that he gets the highest YPA over the middle

wow. so like is there any part of his game that you do like? next thing i'm sure we're going to read is something about the difficultly Ryan Tannehill has with his nuts hanging to the left.

that's the killer!

IMO, any discussion of this stuff is moot until we get an o-line that can keep him upright. It's way too hard to judge a QB who is getting killed all game every game. I think Tanne is doing fine considering, but it's too hard to tell.

In that first link and video it's pretty damning evidence against Tannehill and why we haven't scored over 30 points with him in over 20 games. Once in his career.

Wow it's disturbing and if I was Philbin and Sherman, really concerned their jobs are tied to him.

Can we get a montage of him throwing successfully over the middle?

FOr the record, TheScore is a great mobile app. But it seems their news reports are a little iffy.

You should ask Landshark to put together a video. I am pretty sure he has all the games on tape.

Wow Tannehill must really suck from reading the geniuses who purport to be Dolphins fans on this site. Can't throw to the middle. Can't throw deep. Bad pocket awareness. The woes of the offensive line are overrated. Philbin and Sherman should be worried their jobs are tied to Tannehill. Devlin has more upside.

And my personal favorite, "he will never throw as many three TD passes in a game as Matt Moore has." That's hall of fame brilliance. The best part is this brilliance comes from the Miami fan base.

Let's bash Tannehill every week on Finheaven.

Why is it that every other position and player is fair game for criticism, but when a poster starts a legitimate thread about Tannehill's struggles, people overreact and call foul? The tape shows another area of Tannehill's game that needs improvement or refinement. That's all. Pocket awareness, deep ball timing/accuracy, and anticipation over the middle...all of these aspects of his game have been identified for improvement. Let's leave it at that.

It's not ANY poster. It's just the original poster everyone jumps on. He seems to be on a Holy Quest to bash Tannehill until he is proven right.
