Next year is a whole different ballgame though. The Dolphins have an out in the contract after 2017, when Tannehill's salary becomes $19.8 million and his dead cap number drops to $4.6 million. If Miami decides Tannehill is not a franchise quarterback after 2017, they can move on from him with limited repercussions.

I think everybody was a little perplexed last Dec. when Tannehill didn't have the surgery. Can't say I'm surprised that he's hurt again.

I'm surprised it happened so soon but not surprised. I have a thumb ligament that since initially injuring it was a time bomb and injured two more times - 5-6 month recovery each. And after Tannehill's injury last year all I could think of was the doctor thinking I would heal without surgery from my partial tear, and heal I did, but I knew it wasn't strong enough to sustain anything and sure enough less than two weeks after Tannehill injured his knee I re-tore that ligament just reaching for something and hitting a hard surface with my thumb. I healed quicker without having surgery but I would have healed stronger in the long run with it.

For those of you scoring at home, time bombs are very bad. You do not want a knee to be a time bomb. Schefter also insinuates it was Tannehill who largely "avoided" having the surgery done.

Some of this was posted (buried) in the other structual Ryan thread but basically sos showed it was Ryan's decison and The Darlington article had the 'ticking time bomb' comment in it that I had posted and irked me.

In an article by Armando in March, Tannehill said that he was the one who made the final decision to opt for the rehabilitation process over surgery.

It's easy, very easy, to second guess that now, but Tannehill made the best decision off the best information he had at that time. You can't fault him for being a fiery competitor, consummate leader, and wanting nothing more than to be on the field opening day to kick off the '17 season with his teammates.

It is what it is. **** happens. Now we can only hope that he recovers from whatever setbacks have occurred and have him ready for '18.

His knee, his decision as bad as it has turned out. Can't fault him.

Pointing fingers is point...less... I blame football...

It's beyond reason he didn't have the surgery and it may be the final nail in his careers coffin.

Problem with this HOW are they gonna make a decision IF he is a franchise QB if he doesn't play at all in 2017 ???!!!!.....so, do we flip a coin???

If he misses this season he will come back next year as the starter. Injuries happen and there is no reason to think they can't fix his knee like countless other athletes have done and his physique and style of play don't merit themselves to having the knee reinjured anymore than the next guy.

As far as we can see they already made that decision and his play on the field last time he was healthy didn't suggest anything else. He's one of the most durable QB's to play the game but it was a freak accident that even happened to Tom Brady once, and him crumpling this year was just because a ligament that wasn't fixed went. He'll get the ligament fixed and he still has the same ability that already sold this franchise. Everything will be fine but it sucks for this season.
