Looks like Sean Smith is tearing it up in camp this year. He lost a bunch of weight too (24 lbs) and has been balling it up. Do you guys think we should extend him during the season or let him hit FA and press our luck? Corners are a BIG item in FA and they go fast, so I expect someone to shell out a lot of $ for this him if he his FA. And believe me someone WILL shell out a lot of $ for a big corner like SS.

In comparison, this offseason Brandon Carr got 5 year $50 Mil and last year Nnamdi Asomugha got 5 years $60 Mil. So SS will want something around $10 to $12 Million per year (assuming no hometown discount).

Another option I think could and is more likely to happen is that we extend Long (Joe Thomas got 7 years $84 Mil, $12Mil per year) - who would get $15.36 million if we tag him instead (120% of his 2012 cap number of $12.8 million) - and then tag SS ($10.6 Million 1 year). **THIS IS MY VOTE**
Either way this is an issue for Ireland, the good news is we will have about $40 Million :hclap: in cap space next offseason. At the same time Ireland has shown to be pretty shrewd with the cap and not giving in to players, so I dont see a max contract coming from us. If he wants to stay he will have to take a hometown discount or else he will be shown the door.

ASSUMING he has a breakout year what are your thoughts?

wait for free agency...then decide...if this weight loss doesn't give you a totally different player let him walk...

Sean Smith is good but not 10-12 mil good right now. Given his inability to make game changing plays, wait until the end of the year to make a decision.

8 to 10 million a year? Come on....if we extend him during the year it better be cheaper than that for stone hands smith.

You are kidding right? $8 to $12M per season for Sean Smith.

Don't care how much he is tearing it up in pre-season. He has 3 career ints in 40 games started and is NOT getting that type of contract.

if you pay him $10 mil per off what he did last year your nuts...if he wants to get paid that kind of money from this staff he better come up aces this year...no more bs...

in free agency someone definitely could overpay him there's no doubt about that but i sure hope its not miami...unless this year is a damn career changer

If he plays like he did in 2010. Id extend him.

Like last year. Bye Bye. But apparently dude has had a dominate camp. Only him and Jones haven't been removed from starting spots. And Clemons not counting injury.

My concern is that he's just playing harder because he's in a contract year. I want to see him dominate all year before I give him the money and he regresses back to the mean in which he previously played. And I still may backload the contract to incentivize him to continue playing at a high level.

with smith i' be more worried about the weight coming back on with a new fat contract...i find it hard to believe a guy can mantain his body weight over the long haul losing 24 lbs off an already long thin frame...what is he now 6 ft 3 193 lbs...seems like its gonna be hard to maintain

I gotta agree with hoops. there is no way smith was ever 242. Also I agree on the wait and see about the money.
