Wait until he has proven his value to even start negotiating. I'd say week 12.

Exactly. I've hoped he would come round, but so far he hasn't EARNED a big contract. I would hope that unless he has a MONSTER year that we look elsewhere if SS gets hardnosed about a big contract.
 
He won't want a contract based on his past performance ... that's for sure.

He'll just have to show what he's worth. He's a big talker every pre-season, then pffft!!

Hope he steps up, big time ... Vontae too!!
 
Lets see how he performs this season.

If he has an outstanding season, be careful not to pay him as if he played outstanding for the duration of his time here. If he tries to use one solid season to get a huge payout, then let him do so on the open market.

Be willing to pay him reasonably, but he must understand that he wasnt great the last couple of seasons. No contract should reward that. I cant stand guys who are willing to put in the effort for everything on a contract year and expect to be paid as if they play that way every season. Im not suggesting Smith is one of those guys. We dont even know if he will play well this season or if he will continue to blow as he has in previous years.

Its all just speculation. Frankly, I dont even know why this is a thread. Its common sense. I also dont know where the suggested numbers came from in the poll. Did someone pull those straight out of their ass? Who would vote for any of that? The only reasonable answer is let him play the season and then discuss options. As of right now, the only way he could get an extension would be to accept the market value for a corner who has played below average at the position. I dont think he and his agent would be looking to negotiate right now.
 
If he has a stellar year he will expect, and he will receive, a big paycheck. Look at Reggie Nelson. Great rookie year, terrible year, terrible year, good year -> boom, decent sized contract.
 
If he's better, he'll get a raise, but if he's the Sean Smith of years gone by, he'll probably be looking for another team next year.

wait the year out...if he performs...extend and give him a set of nike pro combat gloves for his hands...might help with some int
 
gotta see him play...if he hasnt learned to tackle then you let him go...if he has learned to tackle and isnt afraid of contact any more you sign him during the season
 
Wait until Free Agency. Dolphins will have both Davis and Marshall under contract for 2013, so signing Smith isn't a priority. I'd rather them retain him at a fair price.
 
If he's willing to extend on the cheap (doubt it), why not?

But there's no reason to give him money he hasn't earned.

Soliai is different in that he actually performed at a HIGH level before he got his contract. Also, his contract is surprisingly modest.
 
Wow, I can't believe the poll results. Almost 60% would pay Smith $8-12M. Seems very high when you consider the salaries of what were the top 10 rated cornerbacks of 2011.

1. Revis 4 years $46M, 11.5 per year
2. Asomugha 5 years $60M, 12 per year
3. Bailey 4 years $43M, 10.7 per year
4. Woodson 5 year $55M, 11 per year
5. Samuel 3 years $14.5M, 4.8 per year
6. Winfield 5 years $36M, 7.2 per year

I agree. It would be crazy to pay him that much. Personally I like SS. But I think 4.5 mil TOPS. If he has a great year.
