I understand that a lot of people still hate Nick Saban. All I can say to those of you are get over it already. It's been 7 months. Yeah, he's a douchebag for leaving the way he did and there were definitely better ways to handle the situation. But that's all in the past now. It's a little rediculous the pile on mentality that still exists around Saban. To say he was a worse coach than Wannstedt is just plain ignorant.
Saban brought in some very good players through the draft in 2 years. Ronnie Brown, Travis Daniels, Channing Crowder, Matt Roth, Derek Hagan and Jason Allen all could be starters this year. He also brought in some good players via free agency such as Keith Traylor, Kevin Carter, Vonnie Holliday, Will Allen, and LJ Shelton. There is no doubt that he left this team in a hell of a lot better shape than he found it. Of course there's always going to be the Brees/Culpepper argument to hang over Nick Saban's tenure in Miami. It's well documented that Saban wanted Brees but the team doctors wouldn't clear him. So instead we ended up with Culpepper. Was Culpepper the wrong choice? I guess we'll never know now. But when you honestly look at it, if you have 2 QBs one with what is the worst shoulder injury you can have and one with what is basically the worst knee injury you can have, which one would you choose?
Saban was a dictator and he ran his team with an iron fist. And in the NFL players aren't as responsive to that as they are in college. But honestly Saban did a good job here in Miami. He went 9-7 in his first year when he had a decent QB, a good RB tandem and Chris Chambers played like he knew what the hell he was doing. And a 9-7 mark for a first year head coach is nothing to be ashamed of. The 6-10 season I think was more of an aberration of having Ronnie being hurt for 4 games, Chambers and McMichael playing like they just don't care and having Joey freakin Harrington as our QB. It's not accurate to say that Saban didn't get a fair shot because he wasn't run out, he left on his own accord. But I think that if Saban would have let Randy Mueller do his job as GM we would have had a great team.
After all it wasn't till Saban came in that Jason Taylor won DPoY. He made our defense which was already one of hte best in the league even better. I mean, when you really look at it most of the players on our team progressed under his leadership. So while he might not be a great GM and might be a jerk and I agree with you all that he should have handled the entire leaving Miami situation a lot differently. But he's not a bad coach. He's a defensive genius actually and he knows how to get the best out of his players. He's just apparently not a really fun guy to play for.
