I don't know if someone already posted this, but Coach Saban did a 20 minute Q&A session with the fans from 6-6:20 today. I'll recap the basics....

1. He spoke highly about Ricky (no pun intended), nothing new, appeal is tomorrow.

2. Someone asked why we couldn't retain Sage or Gus as a backup. Nick said that they offered to match the contracts that both got. He said he would have loved to have either 1 back. He did mention that the Sage situation was a little too early in FA for him.

3. Another fan asked about negotiations with Arrington. Saban emphatically said "we're trying" seemed very enthusiastic about the situation and then he went on to explain how great he thought LA would fit as another outside rusher to take pressure off of JT. He said that all offenses try to slide toward 99 and LA would really help.

4. Channing Crowder. Nick had great things to say about him. Mainly talked about his versatility and how he played the Sam, Mike, Will, and under LB positions.

5. The draft. Someone asked what positions we would target in the draft. He mentioned the secondary, QB, LB, and a third WR. He also said that during the first round of the draft he believes more in drafting the BPA and not "reaching" just to fill holes on the team.

6. A lady asked if the Dolphins would consider bringing back having the coaches wife teach ladies about football during camp. Nick said he thought it was a good idea and he would ask his wife to conduct it. He also said his wife Terri knows a ton about football.

7. QB situation: Nick said DC was ahead of schedule, at the facility daily. Someone asked why we went after DC instead of getting someone in the draft. Nick said he considered it but in order to get into the "top 7" picks he said we would have to gut the entire draft. Also said he expects DC to be ready for the opener and seemed very happy about the aquisition.

8. O-Line: Nick was upset when someone asked about improving the O-Line. He was very proud of what they did last year and thought all they needed more depth and he liked the aquisition of Shelton.

9. Secondary. He said he wanted to add more speed to the secondary going into the offseason. He seemed to imply that he was happy with the current state of the secondary.

Overall it was really interesting. Alot of the topics were coverd in his PC at the owners meetings, but it was cool to see him live and get a feel for him.

I forgot about Harrington. Nick did't mention him by name but he said that sometimes players that are picked high(Joey). Aren't ready yet and lose thier confidence. He said that those players might just need a fresh start.

Thanks for Sharing..If he got upset about 1 question about the OLine, imagine if he came here...hahah

As you stated, he did not mention OL for draft priority..(probably means he will go hard after it..haha)

No problem. I didn't even know he'd be there. I was walking through the club level after the highlight video(which was awesome on the new screens!) and there he was, standing 5 feet away from me.

Edit: My fault, he did also mention interior offensive line as a possible need. He gave some emphasis when he said interior also.

Thanks very much man. That was a great read for me who was unable to be there!

Thanks for the post. I wish I could have been there myself.

Thanks for the info. Sounds like it was the place to be for a Fin fan.

Cracks me up how Nick is more descriptive answering fan questions than he is with the sports media. This guy is good.

Nice read.

Imagine your a offensive coordinator, and you're trying to find a way to neutralize Miami's blitzes. In the 3-4 scheme one or possibly both the outside linebackers provides the pass rush. In this case the left outside linebacker is Jason Taylor, one of the top sack leaders of the last 5 years. The right outside linebacker is Lavar Arrington, one of the best blitzing linebackers in the NFL. On any given play, you have to stop an elite pass rusher from the left, the right, or both. Cover all your bases, and you've already tied one hand behind your back. Guess wrong, and you're screwed. The psychological impact alone would be enough to really hurt an offense.

Is it just me or do the fans get better information on the state of the team and how Nick Saban feels about it at the fan appreciation day than the media does all year? I remember last years session was really interesting as well.

Not to mention you still got that short white guy running around the field reaking havoc on your offense.

Great post. Thanks for the skinny.

I just wish someone would ask Saban to repsond to that knucklehead, Brad Childress, regarding his post-trade Culpepper bashing. I can't wait till we get the Vikings at home....

Assuming that the person providing this got it all 100% (and my thanks to that person -- I don't mean that as a criticism) and that Nick was completely truthful about what he plans to do, I think that we have to conclude that it is very likely that Nick is looking to take a LB or WR with the first pick. I say that because we already know that Nick is not a strict BPA guy nor is he a need guy. He described his system last year pretty well -- he selects areas where there is some need and then takes the best player among those in those areas. I don't prefer this strategy, but it worked pretty well last year.

I think Nick could certainly take a different position (such as CB/S) if he felt the value was better, but 16 looks like a good spot for a WR or a LB.
