If you compare their first year as head coach. Belichick was 6-10 in his first year as coach of the Browns, and 5-11 in his first campaign with the Patriots. Saban has already amassed seven victories in his first year in the NFL with two games left. Both coaches inherited teams that had horrible seasons (Browns were 3-13 before Bill, and of course we were 4-12), but Saban has done a better job. Now I know Saban won't be on Belichick's level until he wins championships, but I have a feeling that may not be too far down the road.

That's a bold statement. Personally, I'm not sold on believing it just yet. Saban is doing an excellent job no doubt, but Belichick is the true master at this stage in their careers....

Saban could eventually reach Belichick status, but he's still got tons to prove in this league before I can compare the two. There is hope however.....

PHINZ RULE!!!!!

There are too many factors to determin who did the beter job IMO.

The title was a bit misleading, but I'm just talking about in their first year as coach. Of course, there's no way that Saban would be better than Belichick if we're talking about their whole careers.

Besides what Skape mentioned, Saban was given Carte Blanche and a the $$$ to hire the best coaches and assistants.

I'm super impressed with the way he's coaching the team though. This whole building one-play-at-a-time mentality is WORKING. I know there are people that will say all we are doing is screwing our draft position but to that I say three things:

1. The goal in football is winning, not necessarily just winning a championship or just getting to the playoffs. Saying that the latter is the only goal that matters ignores the positive feelings that fans and players get every time they win a game, or even every time they have a good play. To focus only on the championship is just glossing over all those warm fuzzy feelings you got when they won game after game...even during an 8-8 or 9-7 season.

2. Some of these players won't be here next year, but most of them will be. We're not going to turn over half the roster like we did this offseason because Saban already has a lot of players in place that he wants to keep around. All those guys that are here now that will be here next year (lets say, 35 or 40 out of 53?), having a winning mentality and having built something in the 2005 season will carry over to the 2006 season. That is important. Ending the season on a disappointing note and losing a bunch of games only means you still have a lot further to go to turn around the losing mentality. Finish the season on a 6-0 run and next season we'll have the convenience of about 35 or 40 players already on the roster who have bought into Saban's process-oriented approach. Having success with that approach merely affirms to the players that are here that the approach works. That should put us in a bit better position than we were after last season, with hardly anyone on the roster buying into the Saban way.

3. Isn't it a source of pride to anyone except me that the Dolphins have only had like, what, three losing seasons in franchise history? Only two since The Don took over as coach I think. I know I have as much pride in that as any feelings about the 72 fins' perfect season.

Long, long way to go on this, but there's obviously a ton of reasons for optimism!

Next year is really big, actually. If we end up with 8 or 9 wins this year, Saban will have to at least deliver playoffs next year to continue this feel-good atmosphere!

Instant pressure! Welcome to the NFL Nick!!

Wayne Fontes went 7-9 in his first full year after the team went 4-12 the year before, holmgren was 9-7 in his 1st yr w/ GB after they went 4-12 the year before, Bill Parcells waw 3-12-1 in his 1st yr, Bill Walsh was 2-14 in his 1st yr. Saban is looking good and off to a good start but it's insane to compare him to Belichick now and if you are comparing him to BB from Cle then you don't have high expectations for Nick as BB in Cle was a failure.

I'm not gonna say he's better then Belichick yet but hopefully before his career as a head coach is over he is up there with Belichick.

The ONLY thing Belichick MASTERED since he has been with the Pats is finding Tom Brady... Belichick needs Brady more than Brady needs Belichick...

Damn, man, you half near made me cry with point# 3. That always makes me pround. It was the main reason I was so upset with last year.

Here's hoping Saban is "Shula II - The Return of the Dolphins."
