I just thought it would be worth mentioning this theory since a couple of my friends have mentioned it. It's definitely clear that Saban had no intention of installing Gus as a permanent solution. He's basically a 1-year stop gap at QB that Saban was forced to commit to because of all the other glaring needs on this team, which Saban actually did well to address through the draft I thought. It's also pretty obvious that the Dolphins aren't going anywhere this season, and probably not next season either unfortunately.

Now I don't subscribe to this theory, but did anyone ever think that Saban might be packing it in for this season so that we can draft high again this season and rebuild this team through the draft?

The main reason he might be doing this is because Wanny and Spielman's drafting over 5 years set this team SOOOOOO far back in terms of their future.

The other thing is that look at the last couple of Super Bowl Champions:
Patriots, Bucs, Rams, etc. All these teams had hit rock bottom for a couple of years (actually more than a couple) before they went on their playoff/super bowl runs. Its during those periods of hitting rock bottom that you can seriously build up your team for a championship through the draft. How do you think Tony Dungy created that great defense?

Its the same in basketball. Look at the Spurs before they drafted Tim Duncan and then more recently Parker and Ginobili. Look at the Heat before they drafted Caron Butler and Wade (and they really hit rock bottom).

Meanwhile, lets look at the teams that have been consistently good teams in teh NFL the last few seaons: Dolphins (before last year), Steelers, Colts, Eagles, Broncos, etc.

How many Super Bowls have they won the last few years? Obviously none, and obviously, these teams haven't hit rock bottom in a while, and as a result, haven't been able to build up their team through drafting. There's clearly more issues involved, and I'm simplifying the problem, but you have to be able to assemble the talent you want through good drafting.

Saban mentioned this soooo many times when he was first introduced as the head coach, and I remember him emphasizing this at almost every press conference: You have to build through the draft in the free agency era. You ever think that Saban might be doing that right now?

Very good point. I think what we need to realize is that Saban is playing with Wanny's team. It wont be till 07 that we can really critique saban, because it wont be untill then that it's really his team

Saban wouldn't derail this team on purpose, if he wanted to he would start Lemon the rest of the season (which I would like to see, even if we did lose a game or two) to see what his potential was.

saban is not gonna tank the season, but he is determined to get his players to play his way even if they lose every game

if you think thats the same thing, that is up to you

There are major holes in that theory. First of all playing the more inexperienced QB would give you more losses. Second, why would he go after all these veterens in free agency. Our team would lose alot more games if we didn't have Schulters, Carter, Jones, Ricky, etc.

i agree bro...i think he will defnitely building this team through the draft...you take a look at our top 4 picks...they all play a considerable amount of time..I think however the problem is suddenly our defense...I mean we have played 2 very good offenses these past two weeks and yes we should have lost both games but who knows whats goin on in Miami.Saban defnitely believes in drafting or he wouldnt play all these rookies like he has.. he likes these players and hopefully down the road in 3 years we will have...i hope 11 players starting on our team that were drafted in Saban's era...if saban can find good coaches with him...Saban will turn into Belichek...but he's a rookie and he's still learning..I think he'll be fine...he has won at every challenge he has done in his life...He made LSU Football a powerhouse...but i think the team lacks a great offensive line...we get that it will open everything up...one good thing about is Ronnie Brown what a stud this guy is gonna be...what an amazing run..we should all be happy...but things will get better not in 2005 or 2006....2007 is the year we will be insane

More stupidity flies. No one that makes it to this level loses purposely to draft higher. Drafting is about making good choices not the order you pick in. Jimmy Johnson was a master no matter what order he picked in. The key is volume of picks not order. Besides we got the best RB that will come out for 5 years of drafting to come already with losing last year. The losing games to draft higher idea is the stupidest thing that the stupidest fans say.

How do you convince the players to put their bodys on the line for nothing??? Half the players are only signed for a year there is no promise they will be here to reep the benefits of losing big for the future, unless.....Saban made such an unusual amount of 1 year sisnings for that very reason.

Well said. I think it was telling that we didn't kick the field goal down the stretch. If those guys didn't want to get shutout, they were gonna have to get into the endzone; Saban wasn't gonna bail them out with a field goal attempt.

I don't know that he is tanking the season on purpose, but the more likely theory is: our team hasn't gained enough talent in one off-season to improve much on our 4-12 record last year.

i think the reason we signed so many players to one year signings is because if they do not play up to par we can let them go the next year and build thru the draft. if the players we signed for the year do good we keep and still get players thru draft and have more depth.

I hadn't thought of it that way, I was hoping for the FG. But you're right get it into the friggin' end zone already! Although with that said they probably should have gone for it at 4th & 1 down 19 points whether they were in there own end or not!
