I have tremendous respect for Nick Saban: I think overall he's done a great job this season, but as we all know, the QB position is just killing this team. I, for one, am so happy to be even discussing the fact that we are only 1 game out of first and still have a legitimate chance for a decent season. But, since we are playing better this year, I can't ignore Gus.
I don't think Saban understands our desire to start Sage. Surely no one expects Sage to be a savior or even that much better than Gus. We're just hoping he's an improvement or even equal to Gus. At least by starting Sage we will know once and for all what Sage is truly capable of doing.
There is no future with Gus - he has never been more than a stop-gap. With Sage, he will either play horribly (in that case, we get rid of him next year), play decently (maybe he stays with us next year as a backup or future starter), or he plays well and competes for a starting job next year.
Sage has the strongest arm, throws more accurately than Gus, and is a very bright guy. He deserves a chance to prove himself.
I don't buy the argument that we have won games with Gus and came close several other games. The main reason we have lost so many games since the Denver game is Gus. He is very inaccurate and fails to come up with the plays we need to win. Teams are stacking the box against us (see Atlanta) and daring Gus to throw. He still can't deliver even under those circumstances with decent receivers and a much improved offensive line.
With Gus, we have no chance at the playoffs. With Sage, we may have a chance at not only the playoffs, but we will be able to determine what he can do which will help next season immensely.
