When he arrived here he wasn't trying to rebuild. He did not clean house or try to get younger. He thought he could win with the talent already on board. I'm a Saban fan, but he screwed up. Instead of getting younger we actually got much older by signing guys like Carter,Holliday, Wilkenson. To his credit those guys are doing pretty damn good. Ladies and gentlemen our beloved Dolphins are in a state of disrepair. It is clear to me this team needs to get younger. I know many us dislike Jimmy Johnson for his tour of duty in Miami. However, I will agree with his philoshy of building through the draft. Like or not he drafted all the stars we have and had on defense. Lets look at some of that talent. Here are just some of the players he was responsible for drafting :

1. Jason Taylor
2. Zack Thomas
3. Patrick Surtain
4. Sam Madison (was damn good early in his career)
5. Adwale Ogunleye

I still think Saban will be a good coach at this level, but it may not happen in Miami. It still can if cleans house and starts from scratch. I doubt the media, fans, and the good people of Miami will have patience for that. His only fault was believing he could win with what we had which will ultimately end up costing his job.

You make a lot of sense and I still like and want Saban to succeed but I am afraid your scenario will happen.

who SHOULD he have "rebuilt" with? He had a hadnful of draft picks and a tight salary cap.

Small salary cap='s signing old broken down players who can't command a huge long term salary.

He's brought in younger guys when he can, but you don't see a whole lot of 24 year old pro-bowl calibre players sitting in FA willing to work for the money we could afford.

Sheesh.

Uh... your theory is wrong. There are only something like 10 players remaining from the Wannstedt era. The question is, has Saban made the right/final personnel moves? Likely not. Saban's doing what he can under a screwed-up salary cap.

It might be time to just blow up the team and start over. I don't think anyone is "untradeable" on this team. I think we need to start making smart draft picks, and then get rid of the dead weight and older guys who have little to offer this team. That may mean a few 6-10 seasons or worse, but sometimes you have to get younger and start over to build for the future.

You can rebuild with veteran player. Look at New England. Belichick immediately signed a bunch of older veterans and retained his quality veterans and then slowly replaced them with younger players.

Why cant we afford them ? It's because most of our money is going to just a few players who aren't all that young.

I think ur right, He came in with picks and cap screwed so lets not even count that year. This year he made moves that made since with rem. players and players that didnt want to be here.

And next year guess what for once in I don't know how many years we will have all our picks and cap room behind us.

Then again he IS Bill Belichik, and Saban WANTS TO BE Bill Belichik, that's the difference.

And who do you expect to cut without taking a tremendous cap hit? Wanny had alot of old plaeyrs signed up with huge bonuses. Those bonuses accelerate instantly if they were to be cut. There i was no way to cut excess fat without putting us deeper in salary cap hell (which we already were in pretty damn deep).

Saban signed a few goo old players to short easy to get out of contracts. He was smart about it, we had no chance at top FA's the first season, and little chance last season.

I'm pretty sure Ogunleye wasn't drafted. He was brought in as an undrafted free agent after missing most of his senior season at Indiana due to a knee injury and I think it may have been Wannstedt that brought him in.

You have a point all so. I think you have to have some older vet's on the team, for that leadership role, above the younger group coming in. There's no way in this league you have a team full of younger players, from who do they continue to learn from, it's not going to be from the coach alone. Having a mixture of players is better in my eyes.

But Saban's 1st mistake was not biting the bullet and taking the cap hit and rebuilding the team. I understand he thought he could win now, but that was his ego talking to him. Now I think he knows he made a big mistake, and he'll now need all 5 years to start to get it rectified. If he gets a 6th year we may finally get to see what Saban is able to do with a winning team.

You guys are all right. He has done a great job with what he had to work with. Thank god because we otherwise might be looking at a very pathetic team that has no emmediate hope for the future. Like I said I like Saban but screwed up, and I do believe he has lost his team. I dont see him being able dig himself out the hole he's not yet done digging.
