Take a look at the two drafts Saban has orchestrated for the team. In the early rounds (1-4) last year we got:

1. Ronnie Brown
2. Matt Roth
3. Channing Crowder
4. Travis Daniels

This year it was:

1. Jason Allen
2. Daunte Culpepper
3. Derek Hagan
4. Joe Toledo

From all indications, it looks like every one of those players is going to be at least a solid starter within a year or two, and of course Ronnie, Crowder, Culpepper, Allen, and Hagan have a chance to be pretty special for the team based on what we're hearing lately.

What this shows me is that Saban is hitting on his early draft picks in a way that usually helps teams become very competitive in the league. Like he always says, if you can build through the draft, you set yourself up to have players for at least four years at salaries that allow you to build the rest of your team with good players as well.

That's how champions are built, and Saban's already doing it within only two years. :chuckle:

I think that you're exactly right, good point. It looks like his first two drafts have been outstanding, although it's still obvioulsy early. Toledo looking this good so far is outstanding.

Thats what it takes to build a core for future championship teams.

I believe the Jury is still out on Roth and would like to see this years picks play some first, but anyway you slice it, the first two drafts have been better then that guy (I forget his name:rolleyes: ) before Saban!

Yeah but these are certainly no where near the draft of 2003

Eddie Moore
Wade Smith
Taylor Whitney
Donald Lee

Yep, Saban is working his magic!

dont forget saban was a big part of alot of the patriots draft picks. because of sabans talent in evaluating college talent

Saban seems to be able to take guys who have question marks and take chances on them. The majority seem to be prospective 1st-2nd round talent but have dropped for whatever reason(s). Figure these players all had question marks coming into the draft:
Channing Crowder-bad knees?
Derek Hagan- dropped passes at Senior Bowl
Joe Toledo- Could he transition to offensive line?
Although he was taken much later, I'm anxious to see Rod Wright in action once he recovers from his shoulder injury.
So far Saban's drafts look solid but takes time to make an accurate assessment.

The drafts look good but we need some more playing time (especially for this year's draft) before we can call them a great success. We have some limited knowledge about the 2005 draft class, but all indicators seem to point towards a 'great' draft designation. 2006 draft class has great potential, but until we see them on the field for a couple of years that is all it is, potential.

I hear that Matt Roth is doing a LOT better this year. He's getting praise from lots of people. Kevin Carter even said that Roth could end up being the reason he might have to retire early ...and Kevin Carter is a guy who's opinion I would definitely listen to. Kevin Carter seems like the kind of guy who would make a good coach after he retires.

From what I've read and heard, Joe Toledo is doing pretty well too. I read that he has pretty good footwork and quickness. It sounds like he's maintained the speed and quickness he had when he was playing 30-40 lbs. lighter as a tight end. He said the weight he gained to play tackle or guard was "good weight" ...mostly muscle. He said his mother is a nutritionist so he's probably taking good care of his body and maximizing his strength and athletic ability. If he's as meticulous about his diet and conditioning as guys like T.O. and he's mastering all the stuff that Coach Houck is teaching him, he might turn out to be yet another great draft pick for Coach Saban. :D

Yeah, so the policy goes from giving the Patriots a franchise RB for Wade Smith, to cutting off the Patriots supply of free info on college players.

I think I like the new way better:D

Have to give Hudson Houck the credit for Toledo.:dolphins:
