ppl say saban goes BPA. remember he said Maroney and Williams were rated higher then the guy they got at the 16th spot but it was hard to draft 2 Rb's 2 years in a row. so taht obvoulsy means, he does still go need to a SLIGHTTTTTTT degree.

Well of course it is BPA based on need. You wouldn't draft Brady Quinn if you have Peyton Manning already. Saban drafts BPA by need of position.

I remember that press conference, and I believe he said that he had both Maroney and Williams rated as high as Jason Allen.

A lot of times there can be drastic changes to a team made by draft the BPA. It opens new strengths that werent there before.

If not prepared to take the BPA, then why not trade down and get the actual value of the pick you hold. We could have got Allen in the end of the first, maybe even the second and came away with an extra 2nd.

We don't really know that. A player taking a pick right above someone else can change that person's outlook. For all we know, som other team probably wanted Jason Allen.

After the draft, Saban said Allen was one of his top 12 "impact" players in the draft, and felt lucky that he fell. His tune seems a bit different now.

How does his tune seem different? If you asked him if Allen was one of the top 12, he'd still say yes I bet. Just because a rookie doesn't play much his first year, doesn't mean he won't be an "impact" player.
