I really think that it is no coincidence that Chambers started really stepping up shortly after being called "decent" by Saban.

Think about it... he has pretty much been getting blown by the organization ever since he was a rookie. They gave him a fat contract... and never got too critical of him (made lots of excuses for him)

Then... Saban comes in and calls him "decent". Chambers was offended by it... but I think Saban knew that was how he could get Chambers to start stepping up. You cant just do that with any player. Some would take it very negatively and it could create an internal conflict. But with Chambers, it fueled him...

Its a perfect example of what Saban got his degree in... Sports Psycology. He knows exactly how to motivate players. You have to take different approaches with different players. Not all respond the same way.

Other examples are Manny Wright and Vickerson...

Manny was a lazy out of shape kid... and Vickerson was known as a turd... now people are refering to them as our future...

It is one of the greatest aspects a coach can have...

Gotta love Saban... :dolphins:

i think its less of saban's comment and more of chris finally starting to step up.

give the kid credit, i dont think it was a comment that made him finally start breaking out, i think he was FINALLY ready to be our premier reciever

I aint crackin on Chambers' talent... I was just saying how I think Saban understands how to get the most out of his players...

I think it has more to do with scott being down on the sidelines. That and no two idiots fighting over being the OC for a 4-12 season. So a OC that throws and on the sidelines so he can adjust to chris.

the OC on the sideline has definatly helped our entire offense. I think we will be seeing him there on a perminant basis...

does anyone agree with me that Saban seems to know how to motivate and get the most of his players? It seems pretty apparent to me...

I totally agree with you. Manny Wright is another player who has benefited from Saban knowing how to motivate him.

Bingo! It has also made Sage and Gus better as well. The whole team benefits.

I think it's a combination of Linehan's being on the sideline and Saban's infamous comment after the Browns game about "evaluating players." At that point Chambers and Madison were the biggest underachievers on the team in terms of their salaries, as well as the guys with the biggest likelihood of facing some kind of contractual change in the offseason (being asked to restructure or be cut or traded). They've been the two players who have stepped up most after the quote -- no coincidence IMO.

So I think it's less the "decent" comment and more the one about using the rest of the season to evaluate guys. Chambers had a couple bad games after the "decent" comment -- he's had NONE after the other one. So I think he's playing with more passion and conviction, and Linehan's being on the sideline has helped elevate his game in a practical sense. And maybe the "decent" comment and the one about "poor tackling on the perimeter of the defense" gave these guys (Chambers and Madison) an idea of how they'd been evaluated by Saban to that point (not well).

I'm actually concerned that Saban may NOT know how to motivate players without using the threat of sending them packing.

Yeah, it seems to work for Indy!

I agree with you about Manny Wright, have no idea about Vickerson and disagree about Chambers. I don't really see a difference in Chambers game. What I see is Gus and Sage hitting him in stride finally. Manny Wright seems to be a spectacular coaching job though. I really think SAban's strength is always going to be defense and though offense won't be, he should put together a better group than wannspit

something clicked inside chambers.....i would attribute that to nick saban and charlie bagget....

chambers has been with us a long time, and never broken out....make the circus catch? drop the one in his bread basket.....he had a tendency to jump for catches he didn't need to jump for ....etc....

i think the combo of bagget and saban + his comments = chambers has something to prove, and that makes him play better.

so i agree with nasty.....to think chambers just now started catching balls is coincindental is not fair to saban and his staff...they are getting the most out of alot of the players

it has more to do with "feed the playmakers"
