Saban needs to control his media mouth

I can see both points of view, Dr. Astros and enig's. I like the idea that Saban is "Parcellsian," but then again Parcells doesn't have gag order on the media like Saban, so his quotes about players don't stand out in sharp relief like this one. Maybe once he's been around a while these quotes will be diluted by others like it. I don't think the fight in camp the day after the quote was any coincidence (I think it was good for the team in the long run), and I do like the idea that Carter felt comfortable to go "against" the coach in the media. Wannstedt's teams never felt "comfortable" enough with each other to fight. How much easier will it be for the defense to get on the offense's back and vice-versa when they've all fought in camp?

In order to control this team, he has to have everyone on it respect him first. so he makes an example of vickerson and wright, by going to the media and talking down about them. then all of a sudden every rookie is put in their place, and they all feel they need to work harder to avoid the same thing happening to them.

Ok........... why is it, that when I bring this up, people seem to think I'm indirectly referring to pampering these guys? Truuuuuuuuuuuust me, the last thing I want is pampering. I have no problems with Saban disciplining these guys, sh*t if he wants to call them trout, go right ahead - just don't do it in the media.........it's just so ironic and so hypocritical that Saban wants the media to have barely any access to the team, yet he will lower his guard so he can rip two developmental players when the last thing they need (especially Manny) is for being shamed in public. Vickerson and Manny have only been in this league for a couple months now.......it's not like they're 6 year veteran slackers.

I can understand your not wanting to call them out in the media, and I see your point about Saban being hyprocritical, but I believe that the only reason that the two players were singled out was because he was specifically asked about them. He mentioned that they weren't the only people that had the trout look. Of course, Saban could've just answered the question by saying that he wasn't going to comment on them, but maybe it was out of frustration that he decided to make them an example? :confused2

One thing that I think could happen is if these guys make some major improvements and Saban praises them in public, their confidence will get a huge boost. Only time will tell if this happens.

he doesn't like the media. and yeah he doesn't want anyone talking to them. However a coach never applies his rules to himself. Hes the coach, the bossman. Everything saban does is an attempt to make miami a better football team. he saw an opportunity to manipulate the media for his own use, so he did. If that makes vickerson and Wright Upset, so be it.

Calling out a player publicly is risky business. Can easily backfire. But, it's not necessarily Saban's job to get every guy on the roster to like him. Remember the last guy we had as a coach here who tried to do that? Coach Wannsomethingorother?

Kevin Vickerson and Manny Wright have a lot of pride. Having the coach say they had a "brook-trout look" in public is an embarrassment to them that they can only make up for by going out there and hitting somebody. I will say I have not seen any negative effects of the comments yet. Vickerson turning to Kevin Carter with his problems is a positive, Kevin Carter coming right out in fierce support of Vickerson is constructive for Vickerson and shows him the value of the bonds he is forming, and having Kevin Carter call you out in public in addition to your head coach may serve to help light that fire under Wright's butt.

Wright is a wad of cookie dough. If what Carter said is true, that he's quitting practices early, sitting out practices, fainting, vomiting, etc then he NEEDS to be called out. He has a lot of pride in what he has the ability to do and he needs to be smeared so that he knows that here in the NFL you can't do jack squat unless you're conditioned like the rest of them.

Saban is no idiot. It appears so far - at least - that everything he does is for a specific purpose. The man is a genious!

When it comes to Kevin Vickerson and Manny Wright, I think Nick Saban needs to watch what he's saying to the media. I'm serious. Look we all know Saban's every bit the opposite of a softy, but those two guys are project players, with Manny being way more "project" than Vickerson. Project players don't have a history of being necessarily mentally tough - yet. They need to be groomed in a more constructive manner. With the way Miami media salivates right now over information, because of Saban's desire to keep everything from them, they're going to blow these two guys up whenever they get something to feed on.

Kevin Carter's recent comments defending Vickerson proves such. Yet both these guys are getting blown up in the media like they're first round draft picks who are not performing up to expected first round standards. I just don't feel like referring to them as gutless trout is going to light that magical fire.

It has been said before about Saban that he uses different tactics to try and motivate players. Some react to public challenges while others would not. I think these guys are kind of "on the bubble" with Saban and this may be a last ditch effort by him to get their arse in gear.

Really guys let Saban play his cards before you start thinking he's making mistakes.

I agree, but What has Saban said to the media directly about these two?

Yes, they did catch him lecturing Manny on the second day of camp, big deal, thats probably why the camp should be closed.

While I do agree he has to be careful about singleing them out as individuals, I think its totally appropriate for Saban to define the type of player he wants in generalizations such as "Wolves", or non-desirable players as "Trout".

I don't think Manny Wright or anybody else expects him to be ready this year, he was drafted as a project and this year he will get in shape and learn.
