When it comes to Kevin Vickerson and Manny Wright, I think Nick Saban needs to watch what he's saying to the media. I'm serious. Look we all know Saban's every bit the opposite of a softy, but those two guys are project players, with Manny being way more "project" than Vickerson. Project players don't have a history of being necessarily mentally tough - yet. They need to be groomed in a more constructive manner. With the way Miami media salivates right now over information, because of Saban's desire to keep everything from them, they're going to blow these two guys up whenever they get something to feed on.

Kevin Carter's recent comments defending Vickerson proves such. Yet both these guys are getting blown up in the media like they're first round draft picks who are not performing up to expected first round standards. I just don't feel like referring to them as gutless trout is going to light that magical fire.

What do you all think?

Agreed. If Saban is so tight-lipped about everything to the point where we can't even have open practices and any sort of info at all, and then the whole "stripper" thing where he is going to fire whoever leaked the info, then WHY would he go bash two of his developmental players to the media? It makes no sense. To quote Saban himself, "it's family business and it stays in the family", well, I think Wright and Vickerson looking like "trout" and not showing that competitive fire yet is family business, so it should stay in the family. Let us see practice and have photos of the rookies progress and stuff, don't tell us that a few rookies are looking like fish.

I think Sabn knows exactly what he's doing. His gamble on this making them better players may or may not pay off, but make no mistake ... this is very calculated behavior.

Rather Bill Parcellsian. (?)

I think I sit on the fence on this one - I agree that the players might not be mentally tough enough yet to take this kind of criticism from the media (which is also proved by Vickerson going to KC and asking what he needs to do), but they need to toughen up at some point.

What I DON'T want is a coach who cares what the media thinks. I can't stand the idea that a coach would spend his time scowering through the papers to find out about what the media thinks of the team. I think that Saban has the right mentality and he is going to try and instill that attitude in the players.

Different people react differently to public criticism. Saban seems like the kind of guy that knows how to get a reaction from his players. Maybe Wright will see the reports and try his best to prove Saban wrong. I know that's what I would do. Turn that negative energy into positive. I don't think Saban's wrong at all, it's his team and he'll speak out however about whoever. I think we've grown accustomed to coaches not singleing out players and when someone does it we think it's mean. It's not mean, just the way he is, and what he believes.

Exactly how I feel about it.
Saban knows exactly what he is doing.

Saban

I believe Saban know exactly what he's doing.... Let the guy coach! These are grown men we're talking about. As Jerry Glanville stated once this is the NFL when stands for Not For Very Long..... These guys just need to go out and do their job like every other American. If they don't like it find something else.

Saban in 2005!!!

When Saban was saying that he was not talking about anyone in particular. It was only when the media pressed for names that he called out those 2. IMO, they need to be called out. They have a golden opportunity with this team and neither of them has responded the way Shaw has. What bothers me most is that neither of them seem to realize the opportunity they have in front of them. I think that's what pissed Nick off too. We know Manny is a project and as much as 2 years away from being a player. But compete, show some damn fire, make a play a tackle, something!!

I think he knows what he's doing. Sometimes you've got to light a public fire under a guy to get him moving. Remember Parcells referring to Terry Glenn as "she"? Now THAT was classic!

He's been picture perfect controling the media! You really think he didn't know what he was saying? Its put up or shut time he's lighting a fire, who ever doesn't burn is gone!

I agree with him on this one. He's pulling a Parcells' move by calling these guys out in the media. He actually told the media guys to print the story cause it would help him out.

(On sharing names of guys who don’t have the eye of the tiger) – “I think that is family business and internal to the team. If I wasn’t asked specifically about [Vickerson and Wright] I wouldn’t have said anything about them or if they weren’t young guys that we are trying to light a fire any way hat we can.â€Â

Besides, enig ... you've never struck as a guy who endorses a kid gloves mentality, anyway.
