Does anyone else have problems with the following quote??

It turns out that Saban did have his eye on Orton, but once the Giants took LSU cornerback Corey Webster in the second round at No. 43, he didn't want to let another one of his former Tiger disciples (Daniels) fall off the board.

This was taken from the article written in the Sun-Sentinel and I guess it boils down to what does "fall off the board" mean?

It could be some other team picks the player so he is then off the board.. or it might be the player isnt picked and so he fell off the board..

Regardless, I appreciate that Saban knows the player and has coached him.. but does that make him the best player availble at that time??

This brings up a good question... would we have been better off with Corey Webster in the 2nd and Kyle Orton in 4th rather than Matt Roth in the 2nd and Travis Daniels in the 4th?

A lot of people are probably going to say they'd rather have Roth and Daniels over Webster and Orton... but I really don't know. Matt Roth was more of the BPA kind of pick over need which Webster would have been both. Either way, as for Saban playing favorites... I kind of felt like he was doing that when he was recruiting LSU staff too but you have to realize he knows what these guys are capable of and knows them better than any other coach in the league, that's definitely a plus in my book and I don't mind that we got Daniels or if we would have gotten Webster.

Well its kinda strange how he has Travis Daniels already running with the first team!

As opposed to all the other great opinions we have at CB.. With Poole out and others be others teams retreds, I think Saban will give a long look to a player he knows, and knows the system.

Maybe it's strange. Or maybe he is just that good, who knows.
The decision between having Roth and Daniels or Webster and Orton is a tough one. Personally, I'd probably have to go with Webster and Orton.

Having coached Daniels, Saban should know about his intellectual capacity (which is hopefully high)....and maybe he feels that Daniels can come in and learn the playbook quickly and contribute right away....we'll find out when the season starts

Webster was gone by the time our second round pick came up. He went 43 overall, while we got Roth at 46. So, by the time our pick came up in the fourth, Daniels must have looked that much more attractive. I would've loved to grab Orton at that spot, but as things turned out (Poole's injury), it looks rather fortuitous that we took a CB. Gotta trust the Coach.

I know Webster was gone. I was answering painnotpleasure's hypothetical question about what 2 players you would rather have. Webster and Orton or Roth and Daniels.

I'd far rather have Roth and Daniels. At the time, we didn't know we'd be losing Poole, so we needed somebody more along the lines of Daniels than Webster even if you think Webster is the more NFL-ready player. There wasn't any reason to add another middle of the road QB to the collection that we had, and DE was a need of sorts in that our defense is getting OLD.

Yikes! no way now how, Ill take the destroyer over the project at QB any day of the week and Daniels knows the system..........no brainer to me. Orton would have severly dissapointed me and the kid will not make it any time soon. He will be the guy who takes about 5 years to finally start and show something if at all.

I did not want Orton at all. I don't think he's going to be a good NFL QB. Daniels is playing with the first team because he already knows the system.

not sure how well orton will do i hope he does well but we will find our qb sometime(soon i hope)

"Fall off the board" means getting drafted. If a player gets drafted, then he is no longer on the draft board. It is pretty simple, no double meanings really

Being that Roth is high energy he could be a special player in certain packages and also used on special teams. As far as Daniels i believe Webster was certainly the better of the two cbs but Orton I believe is not going to develop like Brees did after leaving Purdue. I really think we have the better two. But you could argue either way.
