Just to quell some of the criticism, here is Saban's assesment of Joey's performance yesterday. He did what they wanted him to do.

(On Joey Harrington’s performance against the Bears) – “Joey did a nice job of managing the game. Again, I think the whole plan was to not let this team do what they have done to a lot of teams – get long yardage situations, pin their ears back, smack the quarterback, knock the ball out of his hands and get four or five turnovers in a game. That’s their MO. Our plan was to not create those kind of situations and not give them an opportunity to do that. I think for the most part, we were successful in that. We didn’t have a sack (allowed) in the game. They made a really good play – the guy (Alex Brown) jumping over the cut block and intercepting the ball. That was a great play. We have to do a better job of executing so that the guy can’t do that. I thought Joey did a good job of managing the game and made some nice plays in the game. On two occasions when we had explosive plays in the game – Chris’ (Chambers) touchdown and the check down to Ronnie (Brown) that he ran down for about 24, 25 yards. Joey moved effectively in the pocket away from presure and was able to make a play. We were pleased with that.â€Â

Let's see, do I believe Saben or some of the opinions floating around in here. Hummmmmmmmm,,,hard choice,,hummmmmmm, I'll go with Saben.

Joey needs to relax a bit more. He always looks rushed and scared hopping around. I would like to see him loose his happy feet and plant his feet and throw with a bit more touch and less of his rushed bullets. Both would increase his accuracy. Maybe I'm just being hard on the guy, hell who wouldn't be jumpy playing behind our Oline for this season? He did what a backup QB is suppose to do, he didn't win the game for us, but he didn't loose it either.

I thought he did decent too. He needs to be more accurate though.

He's not playing like a #2 overall pick, that's for sure. But I think right now he is doing what he is told to do versus taking charge of the game. Hope he gets rid of the mental blocks he has a couple of times each game.

Nice to see Saban's got it all down. Now if he can rein in Joey's nervous gunslinging attitude and tell him to relax a bit.

Joey moved effectively in the pocket away from pressure and was able to make a play. We were pleased with that.â€Â

Something Culpepper can't do effectively this year....

Saban has spent the last two weeks saying that sports psychologists are advising him to be positive rather than negative. Did anybody think Saban was going to come out and say we won inspite of JH?

You might be wrong on that choice. I'm predicting the next HC, GM, and OC will be picked straight off of this forum and will take this team to several consecutive Superbowl victories, starting in their first year on the job. It is extremely surprising that no one has yet with the wealth of knowledge some people here possess. Does WH not read this forum? :sidelol:

I know right. Saban basically saying thank God Joey didn't lose it for us. I'd be impressed if Saban said "Joey played great really did a good job." If he is selectively giving praise that means Joey didn't play great. I want a game where saban and all of us say "Joey won the game for us." Joey managing a game is all we expect and what we got. Cool. Position can still be upgraded.

A nice job of "managing the game" is another way of saying you didn't lose, but that your quarterback didn't do very well either.

Joey is doing what we need him to do, he will be a fine backup to Daunte when he gets back to full strength.

Exactly. I want JOey to play lights out. If he is so damn good and Cpep has to ride the pine, who as a phin fan can complain about that?

Unfortunately I'm left to wonder how well Cpep will be healthier, as Joey's play has left me wanting. I'm in SD and I see Rivers play and I wish we had that caliber since Dan left. He's impressed me more.

No doubt. Neither quarterback has been acceptable.

Your last sentence reads true. He did not loose the game. The playcalling and execution improve dto the point that he was not in a awkward position to lose the game. Oh, and the Bears six TOs helped out too.

Behind a strong Defense and an offense that minimizes its mistakes Harrington can be effective. Having said this, I am not convinced yet that Joey is a franchise qb by no means. He may end up being the answer for the next couple of seasons if Culpepper can't come back. But how about after that?

As far as playcalling I believe Mularkey's playcalling was better than any other point in the season. But, he is still on the bad list for me and I think the organization can do better with an eventual change at the OC staff position next year. I look forward to what a better OC can do with new blood brought in during the offseason blended in with who will keep from this year's group.
