I'm listening to the press conference now. And someone asked about Scott's call with Ricky lining up in the shotgun on 4th down near the goal line.

"And he made a 1st down too. I don't care what they said about the replay. I watched the film today. The guy almost went to the 3 yard line. He had to go just short of the 4 to get there. Maybe they couldn't see it on their replays."

Then Saban, in the very same breath, covers his ***.

"I'm not being critical of anybody. I'm just saying the guy made a 1st down."

OT: This makes me feel better about myself. I was using adult language at a very high level of volume in the stands over that call. And I continued to direct adult language at referee Ed Hoculi when he nonchalantly explained "the runner was down where the ball spotted the ball".

I've always felt it's important to believe in yourself and in teaching kids to do the same. So to all the women and children in Section 314.....

You're Welcome

I hated that call, and I think it was iffy if he made it. This is why we have Ronnie Brown, give the 230 pound beast the ball on that play!

VERY BAD CALL... yet another marginal call against us...well the league is full of them this year!
It was a good call and he made it without a doubt!!!! Even the announcers thought so without a doubt!!

I personally loved it. Especially when I saw him get the 1st down. I was standing perpendicular to the LOS. It wasn't even close. I couldn't believe the spot.

Anyway, the reporter asked Saban if Scott has the freedom to make a call like that on his own or does Saban have to approve it. Saban said he approved it.

He explained that it's the same play we run if the QB is under center. But moving Gus outside took one man out of the box. One less guy to play the run.

how many times do you see one ref go against another on calls like these?

Exactly.

You felt like we had a snowball's chance in hell during the review.

OT - I thought you were a Bills fan when I saw that avatar.

Yeah, that was very upsetting. But, it didn't end up mattering. We gave the Bucs the ball on that 4th and inches at the 4 yard line with 10:55 left to go in the 4th quarter. They gave us the ball back again only 2 plays later at the 8 yard line with 10:02 to go in the 4th quarter and Ronnie scored immediately on 1st and Goal from the 8 yard line.

Truth be told, I'm not even sure we would have scored with 10:02 left in the quarter had Ricky made that first down. I'm not impressed with our clock management.

Actually Randy Cross and the other guy before they measured said it was horrible.

They were watching the play and as the chains were being laid down they both were saying horrible spot we're gonna see a replay.

During the replay all they could say was you could clearly see the ball make it to nearly the 3 yard line.

They both expected the call to be overturned.

Horrible call, but the Football Gods evened it out when we got the fumble back.

So the call didn't hurt us one bit.

Yes, his head crossed the 1st down marker, the ball DID NOT before he was down.

It's all about where the ball is and if his forward progress is stopped (or he is down) where you spot the ball....

Yup, gotta love them football gods. They gave us the ball right back, but our poor OL protection and run blocking had already handed the game away.

Thank you captain obvious, but I believe what the folks in the room are trying to say is the replay clearly showed that the ball had reached nearly the 3 yard line, not Ricky's head.

Actually Randy Cross went as far as to mark where the marker was and go into details about why he thought that was a first down and the other announcer agreed.

That was one of the worst ball spots I've seen in my entire life. I would have been ok with it if the refs had gone back and made the right call, but instead they decide to cover their own backsides and uphold the original call. What BS.

I think the main factor here that no one, especially the league, understands is that the ability to "challenege the spot of the ball" makes ZERO sense the way it is interpreted.

If you are challenging the spot of the ball there technically IS NO right or wrong answer to lose a challenge to if the play is committed aside from the sideline or endzone. You're asking an official to estimate time and space via a video clip. Is he doing math in the hood to include angles and distance from where the ball is to where it REALLY is on the physical ground??? Hell no! Therefore that is why you see them say "the ruling is as stands" because they have no idea where it should be.

Challenging the spot of the ball needs to be addressed this way IMO: If you challenge it, the outcome should not be a win or loss but a look at the tape, where to place the ball, and then a re-measurement from there. Challenging the spot of the ball would, however, be assessed as a challenge and if you don't make the first down/inbounds/TD then you lose a time out. The loss of the challenge would be after and automatic re-spot and automatic re-measurement. Not just a *I went in the hood and I don't feel like respotting it because I think I did a good job the first time*
