Complex rating system part of coach's method.
By Ethan J. Skolnick
South Florida Sun-Sentinel

Last Thursday, the secretive coach turned a media session into show and tell, determined to demonstrate "there is a method to the madness here."

Nick Saban produced a prop -- a laminated sheet of criteria with letters too small to see. He scribbled numbers, representing hypothetical rankings, on the greaseboard.

Although you can't truly judge a draft class after it's first year, I believe the Dolphins will end up with the best draft of 2005. Hopefully we can get a repeat performance and of Nick and co this year.

there are no secrets there that every other coach doens; already know. Everyone has a system,. They aren't going to jump to some other system that they read about in a paper. Part of being an NFL coach means you think you have the best system going...it is good to hear the Saban is 'running' the show. He has proven so far that he has a plan and is able to execute. This year should be great!! draft included.

Given Frerotte's remarks the other day regarding Linehans personality since becoming a head coach. "He's the same guy," Frerotte said. "I think he is even more relaxed now.
To me seems hard to imagine him, as well as numerous other head coaches, being anywhere near as immersed in the process and preparation, either individually, or organizationally for the upcoming draft.

To have personally evaluated and/or studied an estimated 300 players of various position and value, on a growing list with still a week to go, suggests Saban should qualify as the respectable guru come Draft Day .

Just because someone seems relaxes does not mean he is not doing his evaluations. Although Linhan should not be as good as evaluating players as a Saban since he has rarely had that responsibility. I am sure every coach in the league is doing alot of preparation for the draft.

Frerrote doesnt go and see linehand on a daily basis. He was probaply referring to when they had a mini camp and linehan should be more relaxed in that kidn of atmosphere.

Good read. But way to keep a secret Saban...

Don't worry. Using a numbering system is not Saban's secret. Read teh article and you will see tha tWannyspeil used one too. The difference? Saban can more correctly tag players with the appropriate number. He knows who's worth what pick and who can and can't help teh team. That is what sets teams apart in the draft, not the numbering system.

I cant say I'm extremely excited about the draft this year. Probably because we dont have a lot of picks, so its going to be a pretty slow draft this year for us. I do think though the first round of the draft is going to be interesting to see who drops all the way down to us. I'm really hoping that we can pick up a solit S or CB. It would also be nice to pick up OL or WR is one of the bigtime players drops down to us.

Dave Wannstedt and Rick Spielman used a different numbering system when they ran the Dolphins' drafts.

They threw darts blindfolded.

good saban uses a system that its too early for me to understand

someone should make a vid of Saban coaching on the sideline with Kurupt's average (yet fitting in this situation) song "I Call the Shots Round Here" playing in the background.

(looks at Nublar)
