It is my humble opinion based on what we know of Saban that he was playing poker with the Brees deal. Don't get me wrong, if we landed Brees, GREAT, but I think he was playing the Brees hand to possibly lower the cost of Culpepper. I also think it was to possibly lower the cost of Brees had we landed him. Brees just wouldn't come off the guaranteed money. Saban made Brees' mind up for him. I believe Saban is an impatient guy when he sees what he likes and it is there for the taking. Take last year's draft. He played Edwards thinking maybe someone would trade draft picks with us. When that didn't work, he picked his guy, Brown. This is the reason people keep saying Daunte was our 2nd, 3rd, 4th, ... 100th option. I believe Saban knew what he wanted and would have been happy with either. I also believe Saban saw something in the medical report of Brees he didn't like and knew it was too big of a gamble. SD just let him walk, that should speak volumes.

And Saban playing poker in a new round. Julian Peterson and Lavar Arrington. Stay tuned !

I'm not sure we'd try to sign both. Who would you sit? Crowder?

Absolutely!!! The article states that landing Arrington would be as significant as landing Culpepper, but I beg to differ. We have Zach. We didn't have a QB. What does that say about Zach and Crowder?:shakeno:

Well, when we're in the 3-4 alignment, we'll have JT, ZT, Crowder and _______ as our LB corps. I believe the article is alluding to Arrington filling the blank and if were to sign him for that role it would be just as significant as the Culpepper signing. Now, if we signed both of them, as you mentioned above, who would be the odd man out? Crowder? I don't think so. We have no need for both of them. Besides the fact that I doubt we could afford to sign them both, anyway.

Read this and see about his lack of protection and see what he had to deal with. Tice was about as adept at coaching as Wanny. Come on. Give the guy a break.
That is not what I laughed about. I laughed about the fact that each time Nick makes a big decision, that he's "playing poker" or creating "mind games".

Drew Brees signed with New Orleans before we even picked up Daunte Culpepper. It basically left us with no choice. Now Nick is saying "We went with Daunte" and Drew is saying "I went with New Orleans". lol..

Honestly, I think he wanted Culpepper all along but he didn't want to part with a draft pick. When Brees became a free agent, he became the option that provided the most "value" to the organization, in Saban's words, because the Dolphins didn't have to give anything up to get him. Since Brees was not willing to lower his contract demands, the "value" swung back in Culpeppers favor with his willingness to restructure etc and Saban pulled the trigger.

Really? I believe you are misinformed. But like it has been said several hundred times now, what difference does it really make. We got a huge improvement over Gus who when healthy could be great. That's all that really matters.

i don't know where you guys come up with some of this crap. if you need it to get through the day then so be it, but all these games you're talking about being played are rediculous. daunte is the one that drove his trade value down by saying he's done in minnesota, not saban's jedi mind trick. in this situation it was simple. culpepper is due a 6 mil roster bonus and the vikes aren't going to pay it. so, they take offers on him up until the day before the roster bonus is due. usually, they don't get many good offers on players like that because everyone knows they are going to be released. when we offered the 2nd round pick it was the best minny had seen and they pulled the trigger before we changed our mind or signed/trade for someone else. the ball was in our court and we probably could have waited and gotten him for less, but given that we weren't able to land brees or schaub, we went ahead and made the deal.
