If it is a stress fracture, as is being reported, I can understand why we waived him. It makes perfect sense. They think he will be out for maybe 8-10 weeks with this injury. We need the roster spot so we cant keep him on the active roster, and we cant put him on IR because we think he will be back to play with some significant games left in the regular season. So we waive him injured. No one will probably sign a guy who will not be able to play the first two months of the season. So, he will remain a unrestricted free agent until week 10 when our first chance at re-signing him would be. Most people would argue that we should have just placed him on IR if he was going to miss so much time. But that is not right, if we can still get him back in week 10, then it is worth the chance to keep him off the roster until then so that he can come back healthy.

In my opinion, this a genius move by Saban. I have completely changed my mind about the whole transaction. We cant hold a roster spot, and we cant put him on IR. So, we waive him so we can keep the roster spot and keep him off IR so we can bring him back when ever he is healthy. You only put guys on IR who wont be back for the entire season.

If Saban believes Poole has starting potential it is still a risky move. I wonder if this is Saban's way of saying he can contribute but doesn't have what it takes to be a starter? I hope Poole makes it back to the Dolphins one way or another because I would like to see what he can do. A stress facture may be enough to scare away other teams.

It was a move I guess that was necessary but far from genius lol. I think he is taking a calculated risk. I still would have rather cut a player that has no chance of making team.

If this is the case, placing him on the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list would have made more sense. If a player is placed on the PUP list, they are inactive for the first 6 games of the season and do not count against our 53-man roster. The player must be activated, released, or placed on IR after the first 6 games. If Saban's intent was to see how his condition improves with the possibility of using him later in the year, the PUP list would make the most sense.

Who knows. Maybe there is something we don't know about the situation. Even still I think Poole would be another one of those guys that spends more time injured than playing.

It's time to get players that can actually play. No more Boston's and Seau's.

Well we could start by not drafting players with an injuury history and not signing guys with injury but that is not what we are doing so far.

Its my understanding that if he clears waivers, we could resign him and put him on IR and he would then be eglible after week 10 instead of inelgible for the season. I could be mistaken thoug, but I think thats how it works...

At any rate, I think its clear Nick doesn't expect him to contribute anytime soon and feels comfortable with what we have. It would also be hard to rely on Poole since he has developed quite an injury history. Best of luck to him in his recovery. Hopefully he still as a future in the NFL.

i'm sure it was strictly about cash - not sure what his salary is this year but i would bet giving him an injury settlement and then possibly resigning him will be more cost effective than just paying him to be on i.r. all year

If he clears waivers, we cannot re-sign him until after week 10, (any other team could sign him at any time beween now and week 10).

So Poole's gonna miss 2 month working with the team and learning the Defense and then be a contributor in the 2nd half of the season? I don't think so but lets hope your right.
