...when he sees evidence that the locker room is abandoning Gus Frerotte just like they abandoned AJ Feeley.
One of Saban's biggest reasons for permanently benching Feeley and raising Gus was because Gus had won the locker room, while AJ had most definitely lost it.
I'm reading Saban's discussion of the QB situation and I am thinking, he's just waiting until the team revolts against Gus. He doesn't want anyone in the locker room questioning whether or not Saban has made a move at QB because he's "packing it in"
He's got a lot of veterans in there that aren't buying this "rebuilding year" mentality at all. They want to win, and win now. I am guessing that Saban feels that making a QB change before they are ready to see one would signal to them that we're giving up on the season and packing it in for next year.
A lot of the players are not likely to see our point of view in saying that Gus gives us very little chance of winning now against decent opponents, while Sage might give us that chance. Sage is the young inexperienced guy to them, the guy who will go through some rough days while he develops, and Gus is the veteran who could lead us to more victories in 2005 than Sage. They don't want to know whether or not Sage can surprise them until they know for a fact that we're not winning with Gus in...and the Bills, Jets, and Falcons games were all close enough that those players aren't likely convinced we can't win with Gus under center.
If we lose next week against New England in embarrassing fashion, we could see just the locker room atmosphere that Saban needs to see before he makes the switch. We're already seeing signs of it, IMO. Chambers and McMichael seemed like the first to flee the AJ Feeley camp and join the Guskateers. Now they seem like the first to jump off the Gus bandwagon as well. Others will likely follow.
I would still prefer Saban take a strong hand in the matter and send a strong message that we're benching Gus Frerotte and starting Sage Rosenfels because we believe he gives us the best chance to win right now, whether Saban believes that is true or not. But, as I've said before, I think he's coaching not to lose.
