Saban's Defense is a 4-3

Alright already!!!

I'm sick of the "hybrid" word. It's a freaking 53 "Okie" defense!!

I think we should play a 6-1 That would stop the run....

Actually that's the weakest run defense I've ever seen. Vince Dooley must have been nuts.

I'd trap that mutha' all day long.

I believe Saban himself has said we'll use a 3-4 alignment approximately 20 percent of the time. I think people need to lighten up on the 3-4/4-3 issue, including the people who keep coming up and bashing anyone who talks about personnel from a 3-4 perspective.

The fact of the matter is, while Saban will not actually run a base 3-4 (for now, we don't know if he will ever change this), his defense will run on many of the same principles and his personnel strategy will share many values with a traditional 3-4 defense's personnel strategy. When someone on the board talks about a guy being a good 3-4 OLB, or talks about Jason Taylor being a good 3-4 OLB, they shouldn't necessarily be blasted for accusing Saban of running a 3-4 say, 80% of the time instead of just 20%. The bottom line is if you talk about a guy who is a good candidate to be a 3-4 ILB or OLB, or DE or even NT, chances are, the guy will fit into this "4-3" defense that Saban will be running.

So I think it is time to drop the subject.

Lets' put it this way...

If you have Bowens and Carter as DT's, Taylor and Holliday as DE's, all the defensive line would have to do is shift to the right with Taylor going to a 2 point stance right before the snap and BAM!!!

There's your 3-4 defense.

A lot of people on this board seem to think that Saban is installing a 3-4 defense. This isn't correct. I've tried to address this in a couple of different threads, but many people still seem to think Saban uses a 3-4 defense as his base defense. He doesn't.

I'm a Michgan State Spartan fan. He coached here for 10 years. All with a 4-3 defense.

As a defensive coordinator for the Browns? 4-3 defense.

As head coach at LSU? 4-3 defense

What is he planning to install in Miami? A 4-3 defense.

The 4-3 defense will be the base defense the Dolphins will use this year. There is a clip on Fins TV of Saban saying that the Miami defense will be a 4-3 (with some odd). It's in the "One on one with Saban" clip. You will hardly ever see the Dolphins in a 3-4.
I hope you're right...

Imight as well throw my 2 cents in here as well. I agre it will be primaril 4-3 but definately more unique. It will no longer be a reliance on outstanding talent at each individual position (ie corners on an island, front 4 fully responisible for pressure and containement etc.) I think there will be more shifting of positions, disguised looks, the occasional 3-4 and lots of mixed coverages and blitz packages. Don't rely on just great individual play. Keep them confused and guessing.

And Saban will have the offenses scouted so that the best alignment and def players will be out there to our advantage most of the time.

No more of us lining up with the offense knowing where we are and what we will be doing.

I will say this. I just listened to the veterans interview with reporters and neither Junior Seau nor Zach Thomas corrected anybody when they asked about transitioning to a 3-4 defense. Junior even went so far as to say he'd play inside on a 3-4 AND on a 4-3, and Zach went as far as saying his reads on the 3-4 defense are just about identical as the 4-3 defense and that he can see where size could be important at the OLB spots on the 3-4 but it doesn't make a lick of difference on the inside.

I'm not saying Saban is secretly going to unveil a base 3-4 defense when we have our season opener...but I will say that this defense is closer to a 3-4 than it is the 4-3 that we have been running here in Miami the past decade.
