do all you remember this past season when nick saban came out and said the new rule changes for defensive backs have made it so there cant be shutdown corners in this league? well he did, he said it and its true. with new rules and penalties supporting wr's there isn't a #1 or top 5 cb group that will shutdown the other wr. Chad johnson showed that in his chart last season having 15 checked yes's and 1 no for having good games. Yes, there are great cornerbacks who create turnovers and make plays but they cant perform to dominance like they have in the past b/c of the new rules of the nfl. this goes on to say we wont draft a cb first round b/c going by BPA there are much better and more productive players at different positions worthy of a first round pick. He recently said the most important players are those who can help cpep make plays on offense and who can get to the quarterback on defense. Those who help cpep are wide receivers (jackson holmes) and those who get to the quarterback are our de de/olb (lawson, wimbley). This further proves we will go either wr or a pass rusher because he said those are the two most important areas of the game and how the dominance of cornerbacks has diminshed.

he's also said he wants big fast physical corners and safeties that can hit. So it's hard to see him passing on a guy that can blitz, tackle and cover, even if NFL life is a little harder for them

I follow your logic, I also think Saban rightly thinks of himself as a DB guru ,and probably thinks under todays rules he can find gems beyond the first round.

agreed. i think hell take one or two after the first round where he sees the talent. not first round tho

By this logic, the gifted ballhawking DB becomes even MORE of a comidity. The guy that has the speed and skills to make a play on the ball as opposed to physicaly hindering the WR. Maybe this is why we have seen Surtain and Madison (both known for their physicality rather than sheer speed) depart in favor of guys like Allen.

This also creates a need for safeties that can flat lay a guy out. When the speed man cant come down with the ball, there's nothing better than a hit from the balistic missile-like enforcer (ala Pitt's Palamalu or Indy's Sanders).

Jimmy Williams from Virginia Tech fits that perfectly. if we do draft a safety, then I hope it's him.

Well i don't agree with the logic. I'd rather have the best player deal with the most handicapped position. Otherwise, instead of guys getting burnt once in a while you have a NIGHTMARE.

Exactly and great supporting evidence - I believe you're right and hope that's how it plays out. Holmes or Lawson!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

After listening to the draft press conf over on the offical site it makes me believe we are not going WR in the first rd. That leaves us with OLB with the first rd.

imo the thread poster is right, at least through his point that as you can't have dominance anymore with pass-defense, due the new rules, you try to have dominance at the other spots, so you avoid the pass..then you try and build a dominant DL and pass-rush defense.
It's harder now to get turnovers from interceptions, so you use speedy guys who can tackle so you won't get burned, and use the pass-rush defense to get your turnovers and avoid the pass. That's why he says the DB ballhawking is not so important anymore.

If the right players is there we could go from DT to QB, but it's unlikely Vince Young or Haloti Ngata will be available ie BPA. That being said Saban will take the player best capable of changing the game at # 16 and Holmes or Jackson can definitely acheive that. But OLB is a high priority as well and the WR's left in the 3rd round look to be strong so... 5 days baby!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
