Saban's Press Conference

i don't know why but they broke it up into three parts. i listened to it earlier but it is a lot different watching

Here it is

MIAMI DOLPHINS TRAINING FACILITY

(Opening remarks) – “After watching the tape we really feel that our first units both really improved. Offensively our pass protection was better. We did a little bit better of a job running the football. We had some space in there and air against what is probably a pretty decent front. Defensively, I thought, the first 23 plays of the game we really put pressure on the quarterback and played pretty well on the line of scrimmage and improved a little bit in the back end, in terms of maintaining better position on receivers, down the field, playing long balls and did a pretty decent job on third down, at least in the beginning of the game, but as the game wore on we obviously didn’t do what we needed to do. I think that one of the real critical factors is our players developing and continuing to develop the understanding of how important it is for each guy to do their job so we don’t have those drive-stopping mistakes, whether they are a penalty, a missed assignment, a missed route, a misread or whatever it might be. We have enough firepower rowing the boat, but everybody in the boat has to row in unison for the boat to move at the most efficient speed. Obviously, when you watch those guys row together and [the coxswain] is giving that sound back there, the ones that do it the best together are the ones that over the long haul can focus on the next stroke, stay in unison and not make those kinds of mistakes and it takes a lot of discipline and a lot of focus. Discipline is a key word for us to continue to work on and build, in terms of our ability to execute with consistency. That’s what we’ll work on.

“I know you have a lot of questions about the quarterback situation. We will continue to evaluate that. We are not going to put a timetable on when we make a decision about it. I’ve watched the defensive film, I’ve watched the offensive film. We [haven’t] really had our staff meeting yet, so we haven’t had a chance to discuss a lot of these things. I certainly don’t want anybody to read anything in the newspaper that we don’t have the first opportunity to discuss with our players, our coaches and everybody else. It was interesting, again, to see Sage (Rosenfels) and Brock (Berlin) both go in the game at the end of the game and put together drives that resulted in points. They’re obviously playing at a different time in the game against different players, but it’s good to see that we stayed out there, we competed and we finished the game. I didn’t see any give-up in them and they executed and did some good things while they were out there.

“Ricky, obviously, made some improvement from week one to week two, but, as I said before, he’s battling expectation and I think being patient with him, letting him develop and get back into playing the kind of football he’s capable of and getting the reps he needs to feel comfortable in a new offense, is something that certainly has enhanced his ability to perform a little bit better and feel more comfortable and confident in what he was doing. We were pleased to see that.

“Depth is really important on any football team. That’s something we have to continue to focus on to try to improve, make good choices and decisions about the players that we have, develop the players that we have and get them to play a little bit better. A real key to our success is developing the kind of depth on this football team that you need to get through a 16-game season and we’re not where we need to be in that regard in certain positions on this team. It’s something that we still have to continue to develop and work to improve. I think our team improved from the first week to the second week and even some of those guys improved. It didn’t always show in the results that they got on the field, but I think they did improve.

“From an injury standpoint, Travis Daniels strained his hamstring. That’s probably a couple-day thing, it’s really not a full pull or anything like that, but it’s going to be day-to-day. Alex Holmes had an A/C shoulder [injury] and he’ll be day-to-day, as well, but maybe a little more questionable for this game. All the other players that have been out, whether it be Junior (Seau) or whoever it might be, we are going to evaluate those guys day-to-day and are not going to make any predictions at this time as to whether they’ll be able to play in the next game or not. Those are only decisions that we can make as we gather information through the course of this week to see how they improve and feel comfortable that their injuries are not something that are going to be a difficult circumstance for them to work through, in terms of game competition.

“I don’t have anything else to report about Ronnie Brown. It is what it is and you know what it is. We’ve put our best foot forward to try and get the guy here. We’re trying to make it a good situation for any player, but also we have to be conscious of the future of the organization, in terms of what we do with a pick this high. I think that’s been handled well organizationally.

“Vonnie Holliday played in his first game out there. We were pleased that he got in there, competed and didn’t have any problems. I’m sure that he will continue to feel more comfortable, like most players do. First games are difficult and he did some good things. We’re hopeful we can build on that with him.â€Â

(On the individual quarterback play) – “I think that all of the guys have done some good things. What it comes down to is consistency and leadership. I think that is what these decisions are going to get made on and about. Who manages the team the best, who makes the best choices and decisions and who the players have the most confidence in, relative to their ability to execute on a consistent basis and who can affect our team the best so that we can play together as a unit and utilize the skill players that we’ve had at all positions - running back, wide receiver - and that is what we are going to try to do. I think all the guys have, at some point and time, shown an ability to make plays that a quarterback has to make. That some of these intangible things that we are talking about, whether it is judgment, decision - making and leadership, I think that they are all critical, long-term for us, in our development as an offensive team and that is what we’ll try to make the decisions based on.â€Â

(On if he has enough information on the quarterbacks to name a starting quarterback) – “I think everyone is going to get a chance on Saturday, at every position. I think we’re gathering enough information. It is a work in progress. The depth chart that I talk to you guys about so many times that is so critical to your well-being as professionals, is just a snapshot in time for us right now. We’ve got to better develop our team. I am not going to stand here and make comparisons between players. That is not something that I feel comfortable doing. We are getting where we need to be. “

(On the snap in the shotgun that caught the quarterbacks off-guard) – “I think there were two things that were working there. This is Seth’s (McKinney) first game starting at center, even though he played center the week before. Noise was not a factor the first game. It was a little bit of a factor, especially when we got down in the red zone on third down situations twice in the game. Gus (Frerotte) is really smart about trying to hold the count when the team is showing a blitz, which gives us a chance to redirect what we are doing a little bit, make everybody aware of what is happening. I think he got a little bit antsy, maybe, and snapped the ball early, but in Seth’s defense, I don’t think any of these things are not correctable with some repetitions or togetherness in those kinds of situations. This was our first opportunity to be in a situation like that. You have to make a decision to use the cadence or if noise is a factor, you want to go with a silent. We have worked both, but we need to continue to work on that so we get in sync with what we are doing.â€Â

(On if he has the players to develop depth) – “We are going to coach and develop the players that we have here. They’re our babies and we’re going to coach and develop and do the best that we can. We also are going to evaluate players that are available and bring the best possible players to our team any way that we can. I think that is going to be ongoing regardless of where we go with this team in the future because that’s the nature of what we do and what we need to do. I think making good choices and decisions in those areas are critical to long term success. I am not going to give our players any excuses for not being successful, so we are going to take the guys that we have here and give each and every one of them to play as well as they can possibly play. We want that to good enough in some cases if we need to look elsewhere to try improve our team and the depth of our team, we will certainly do it.â€Â

(On if Rex Hadnot will play center against Pittsburgh) – “That’s a decision that we’ll talk about and discuss as a staff. I think he’s capable at both positions. I think you spend some time, especially as a new staff finding out what players can do at all positions and how you would like to use them. I think that on the offensive line we are looking for that chemistry to come together as to what would be best for us right now in how we move ahead.â€Â

(On if there is competition for the No. 2 quarterback spot) – “I think there is a competition on our team at every position as to who ends up where. I think everybody needs to understand that relative to their particular position. We are looking for guys who can play winning football and can take it out there on the field with consistency and discipline, knowledge, execution, instincts, decision-making, judgment, all those things contribute to guys making good plays and big plays. It is not all just about ability. That’s what we want to do at all positions and I don’t think quarterback is any different.â€Â

(On if Chris Chambers is hurt from the hit he took on Saturday) – “If he is injured I am not aware of it.â€Â

(On the health status of Larry Chester and Eddie Moore) – “I think that we’ve had to work those guys to try to get them where they need to be to get on the field. I think Eddie Moore may be getting close to that, but we will probably make that decision tomorrow as to what we do with him. Larry Chester, I think has still got some work to do to get to where he needs to be. What we would like to be able to do, and we’ve been cautious with both of these players, is get them back in the best shape we possibly can, so that when they do go on the field it’s not going to be for one or two days and then they have continual problems. That’s our goal, but this is not an exact science when it comes to making these kind of determinations. I think that both of these guys, from a medical standpoint you could say, they’ve overcome [the injury] part of what they need to do. But now can they get in the kind of football condition they need to be in not to put themselves at risk for re-injury where they go out there for two or three days or one game and we’re right back at square one with them? That’s the determination we’re trying to make with these guys right now.â€Â

(On Ricky Williams working with the first-team offensive line) – “He was with the first-team offensive line both games. He usually plays so many plays with that group. Our goal was to get him 15 plays in last night’s game and the bulk of those plays with the first unit. I can’t give you the number breakdown, but we feel it’s most important right now that he plays, gets back to where he feels comfortable and confident when he’s in there and knows what to do, how to do it and why it’s important to do it that way in a new system. I don’t think anybody here doubts his ability to play this game extremely well and that he’ll be able to do that again if he stays committed to wanting to do it.â€Â

(On if he is surprised by anything Williams has done) – “No.â€Â

(On if the quarterback position will be “slashed†on the depth chart this week) – “We haven’t decided yet.â€Â

(On if the quarterback who does not start will automatically be the No. 2) – “I think we will tell the players when and if we decide to make a decision as to who the starting quarterback is, at that moment everybody will be told exactly what the situation and circumstance is. That doesn’t mean that is for all time. I think every player knows that he has a responsibility and obligation to perform like a starter. Everybody has a choice and decision to continue to compete for that position. I would hope that we don’t have players on our team who let the pth chart determine the kind of character and attitude that they compete with. You would say ‘that would never happen.’ But it does. Some guys, if they think they have an opportunity to play they prepare better, they practice better and they end up in a situation where they actually play better and then if they are second team they let it affect them and they don’t do it the same way. That’s not really something that we want because you have to prepare yourself to take advantage of an opportunity when it comes. That’s what we would like for all of our players to do and I actually felt like we had more players do that in this game than the first one.â€Â

(His reaction to LSU junior running back Alley Broussard’s injury) – “I just heard about that just a little bit ago. I know this place doesn’t look like a cocoon, but sometimes it can be. I just heard about that and I would like to try to get in touch with him.â€Â

For those who haven't seen it, it is on the Insider at the team site

I watched the press conference and the highlights, I'll tell you what, we seem to look like a team that knows whats coming on both sides of the ball. What I notice is when a play is called fin players seem to be in position to make plays. On the passes the Jags completed there was a defender right with them, there WR's didn't seem to get much seperation from our DB's or LB's.

As for the blocking it was not bad at all, It seemed there were a little pressure was used and our QB's had to move to avoid a sack, but they seem to have time to avoid the pressure instead of being hit as the ball get to the QB like last year. The outcaome wasn't what I'd hoped, but all in all I see improvement on the mechanics and tehcniques. It's seemed to me when the Jags scored it was by a simple mistake such as not wraping up when making a tackle (KR) or a deflected TD catch. IMO these things will become less frequent as the season progresses.

Also the LB Jason Glenn, Arron Glenns brother seemed to be all over the field. Two weeks now Glens name is being called. If I remember correctly the Jet fans were not happy we got Glenn, I understand why. If he does not make this team he will be playing somewhere this year and being disruptive!!!!
We seem to have much better LB depth this year....MUCH BETTER!!

Anyway, thats what I saw so if anyone hasen't seen the highlights there are part of the Saban PC, you need realplayer to watch.

I propose to give him Eddie Moore's roster spot... since he's done absolutely nothing special with it himself.
