There are four quarterbacks whose names constantly come up as the best and the brightest in this year's draft. Vince Young, Matt Leinart, Jay Cutler, and Brodie Croyle.

I believe that Leinart is the only one of these four who could possibly start as a rookie, and even he should get a year on the bench to acclimate. The other three could theoretically start after one year on the bench, but I expect it to take closer to a year and a half to two years.

On the flip side, Philip Rivers would start immediately.

I went back last night and watched Rivers last game at N.C. State. A Tangerine Bowl lashing of Kansas. Here is my abbreviated comparisons with the other four.

* Rivers is more accurate than any of the other four.

* Only Leinart has comparable decision making skills.

* Only Cutler has comparable arm strength.

* Young and Cutler are better athletes, but none of the five are Kerry Collins, including Leinart.

* Its unorthodox, but, Rivers gets it out quicker than any of the four.

* Rivers is about 18 months older with two years in a pro offense.

Now, I assume many might think River's is unattainable because of the injury to Brees. I don't necessarilty buy that. According to published reports, this is not an injury that will have an effect on Brees's arm down the road. And secondly, the Charger's must trade River's within this off-season if they want any shot at getting a pick in the top half of the draft.

So, if this is true, what do I think it will take to get Rivers. My best guess is that it would take the 16th pick and a willingness to take on some or all of the salary. I think that is a risk Nick Saban is willing to take.

I won't be surprised if Saban goes hard after Hutchinson and then Rivers come the first week of March.

You're missing the most obvious point, he's as polished out their on the football field as those soon to be draftees. Meaning he's not a proven NFL starter either.

Good Point!!!

I don't know if hes the best decision for the team and the team would have to give up our first round pick and possibly more. Plus he has a big salary I am not completely against it but I am a little iffy!

I am not missing the point. I understand that he is just as unproven as the other four. I agree whole heartedly. However, he would be drafted in the top 7 if he were coming out right now. Possibly top 5.

My point is that how many 24 year old signal callers with top 5 skills can possibly be had at the 16th pick. Not many.

If Miami does not grab River's, they will not have a shot at a quarterback with elite skills again. (I don't put Cutler in that category) Unless they get real bad at some point, which I don't expect.

I don't care who we get. As long as he is an upgrade. I know that Saban wont be calling me asking for my advice. So I will just leave it to the man to make the correct desicion.

I agree 100%.

If you ask me, Rivers compares pretty favorably to Leinart. The question is not whether or not Rivers is proven, it's whether he's as good/better an option than what we will have at #16. If Cutler doesn't fall to us, I would love to trade our 1st rounder for Rivers.

Rivers would be ideal for us. And we could probably get him for a 2nd rounder and a veteran (Madison). San Diego needs a corner and will be hard pressed to pay Rivers that massive bonus this year.

If we got River's from S.D. for a 2nd and a veteran ( I am assuming you are talking Madison ) the Chargers would have to be checked for mental problems.

He may be just as proven an NFL starter as the other guys. However, he still has had 2 years in the league with NFL practice, coaching, and mostly sideline spectating.

I dont know about rivers...

Rather spend #2 on Whitehurst or Croyle than getting Rivers or Cutler with our #1

I don't think Whitehurst is a 2nd, and I don't think Cutler is a 1st. Croyle is a 2nd-3rd.
