I hate posting this but we know it's kinda true. As much as we love the Dolphins, we know that our fanbase sucks. I post this hoping that the teams performance will cause new fans this year and electrify the existing fan base. Yes, I know that the Dolphins have some of the best fans in the NFL (yours truly included). I've cheered at Dolphins games until I thought my head would explode and I couldn't talk or hear for a few days. I've had security try to kick me out for yelling at fans to get off their butts and to stand up and cheer for the Phins. When I go to the games its onesy twosy as I don't live in the area. So when I go, its always in a different section. I used to run a hotel in South Beach so I think I may have figured out some of the reasons that the Dolphins have fanbase issues:
We've been an inconsistent team in regards to wins/losses. While we're still #2 all time since merger wins, since Marino and Shula we have had umpteen QB's and coaches. There hasn't been anything invigorating and consistent enough to cause people to become Dolphin fans. Without this, more and more Dolphins keep moving out of the area replaced by fans of other teams or no teams at all.
Miami is too worldly of a city. Think about it. If you live in Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, Green Bay, Kansas City, St Louis, etc, what else is there to do? Odds are you came from a football family and watching football is what you do on Sunday period. I mean if you're in Michigan you watch the Redwings, Tigers and Lions. Thats what you do. In Miami, I used to watch it. I used to try to talk my guests into going to the games. Miami has so many people from so many places, they don't even know what American Football is. If you disagree with this, pick a day and go to Dolphin Mall. Find me some Dolphins fans....
Miami is a retirement area. When all the people move down, they are fans of other teams and they have been for years and years! I live in Naples. When I go to a sports bar, It's all Packers, Lions, Patriots, Jets, Bills, Bears, and now some Seahawks. If there are 150 people in a sports bar during the Dolphins game, there are MAYBE 10 Dolphins Jerseys.
It's stupid hot for the first month of the season! Look I love Miami. But I only go to a game in September if I have LIV seats. It's just too hot. 99% humidity. I served my time and went to PLENTY of games in September. I'm tired of having sweat pour off of me and spending the rest of the day felling horrible. Ownership needs air conditioned seats throughout the stadium, a mister system, something! I know I sound like a wuss but if they made this change, we'd have more fans in the seats.
It's beautiful for the rest of the season! As such, if the Phins aren't looking overly exciting/entrancing, the fringe Phans go and do other things. It's Miami! They take out the boat, they go to the beach. Again, I DON'T condone these things but it's what happens.
The stadium is in a stupid location!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Someone dig up Joe Robbie and ask him what was he thinking? The Dolphins stadium should be where the Marlins stadium is. BINGO. Instant additional 5,000 Dolphins fans per game. I went to Indy a few years ago and watched the Phins beat the Colts. Stadium is awesome. Right in the middle of the city. We could walk there or take a short cab ride across city. What an ideal thought!!!! Have the stadium in the city that the team is named after! Wow! The fans from the other teams are on a mission. They came to town to go to that game.
Dolphins fans put up their tickets for sale and let fans of other teams buy them! YES, when you just stick them on Stubhub, they get bought up often by fans of other teams. If you are a Phins fan, own season tickets and can't make a game, make sure you sell them to fans of the Dolphins. Don't know how to do that, then figure it out. Sell them on here or let them go empty. Thats better than Jets fans sitting in them!!!!!
I return to the on field product. That's the key. If we can get in the playoffs and be relevant, we'll start getting new fans. The stadium improvements should help too by getting us closer to the field so there will be crowd noise. Though we almost need some form of pregame tutorial. When the defense is on the field, scream. Don't just scream on third down. All the time! Next, stand up! Your LaZBoy is at home. Here, you're a fan. You have a responsibility to stand up and cheer for your team. No need to be vulgar but you're PART OF THE HOME TEAM!!!! Maybe we need a pre game pep rally. I'm just spitballing here. I have heard more cheering happen over the last few years as Tannehill has improved but it's still borderline pathetic when you consider the entire stadium.
The of us on here are great fans. We are the tip of the spear. After reading this, I'll make it to more games this year. We need to teach our fellow fans how to be better. We need to get non football fans to become Dolphins fans (I've done this with at least 40 people). We need to look at this article as a challenge. What can you do to help the Dolphins have better fans. Imagine if everyone that reads this gets just 10 people who don't watch football to be Dolphin fans. Sure. the guys in the jerseys on the field need to do there part too but lets see what we can do!
We are Dolphans! The best team in the NFL. We are the lifeblood.
