Much has been written about Sage Rosenfels on this board. I want to try and fairly evaluate him to determine where he might fit in with the Dolphins this year and beyond.

Here is what we know. Sage has good height, weight, arm strength, and smarts to be an NFL QB. Sage had an excellent college career at Iowa and played very well in his short stint with the Redskins, albeit in a backup role and games that didn't count. With the exception of the Browns game, Sage has always played well during preseason and whenever called upon.

What Sage lacks is experience. I think the lack of experience and the heightened possibility of creating a starting job for himself freaked him out and he was really nervous playing against the Browns. Not to mention, the whole team sucked in that game.

Sage didn't have time to get nervous for the Bills game and simply played on instincts. He got some decent blocking and help from Chris Chambers.

I don't know how good Sage can become, but I think there is enough there that we should play him more. Gus is the worst ranked starting QB in this league, as far as throwing accuracy. Gus has what Sage doesn't have - tons of experience which helps him be a good leader and game manager.

Sage is an accurate passer that can throw the deep ball. He is a very intelligent guy who is more than capable of managing a game. His lack of experience is what hurts him, because the speed and intensity of an NFL game is something he has rarely seen. It takes time to adjust and play well under those circumstances. At least with Sage, there is a possibility of an upside.

Nice post.

I would like to see Rosenfels get a shot at another start, so he can prove to himself and everyone else that the Browns game was a fluke... and that the Bills game wasn't. Another thing I like about Rosenfels is his heart, he is a true team player who wants to win so badly.

That's an excellent point. Sage is a true team player and he does take a great deal of pride in his responsibilities. I think Saban really like Sage. He blew out AJ and elevated Sage and has stuck by him. He commented today that Sage played an excellent game yesterday. I hope Sage gets another shot.

I don't know what happened yesterday, but when Sage got in the game the team took on a different identity. Sage played like a deer in headlights against the Browns, but yesterday he showed the ability to read progressions and hit the check down receiver. There has definitely been enough development there that he deserves a chance under center. Some of the players that have been here with Sage may subconsciously pick up their level of play when Sage is in game, so that might warrant a change. Saban talks about how certain players affect their peers, and that might be the case with Sage.

Funny, replace "Rosenfels" with "Fiedler" and it's the same post we've seen for years.

I agree though. I'd like so see what Sage can do too. Every player has good and bad games. Let's see which one he produces over the long term.

I think we should play him. But we used to say these things about Feeley too, so I have cautious optimism, but he is FA so we should definitely play him so we can evaluate whether to re-sign. I still have a feeling that Saban will get a different QB...
