I am not giving up on Gase.
Yes, this offense is putrid. To not score except for a consolation TD when the game is over, is bad ... but that Jets defense isn't as bad as it's stats say. But yeah, the Sains ARE that bad. No points vs. that defense is a complete failure. Gotta put the blame on Gase first, the OL second, and our OL Scouts third. We cannot open holes in the run game. Our RB is good. We cannot generate a strong passing offense and without a run game ... we're utterly ineffective.
Gase:
The play calling is not good enough. Throwing short of the sticks when the defense has proven repeatedly they will let u catch it and you cannot get the extra yards needed for the first ... not acceptable. Forcing plays inside when the option to bounce outside is there ... not wise. Not utilizing the TE position ... not smart. Not varying our offense ... not tactically astute. Not letting your QB lean on his comfort zone (throwing it up to DeVante Parker) ... well that has mixed results, but if you are literally scoring ZERO points in 7 of the last 8 quarters, it's time to try something different!
OL:
Let's be honest, when the run lanes are there everything in our offense works. Ajayi forces a safety up, and we still move the chains. With one less DB in coverage, someone should always be open. With an occasional shot downfield, we may be able to soften up their run defense. But it relies on the OL opening up run lanes. I distinctly recall one play where every offensive and defensive player along the defensive front 7 and offensive OL+TE blocking were bunched up in a narrow scrum. Ajayi chose to run behind Ju'Wuan James, and upon contact from Ajayi, James completely released his block (assisting with the TE) to run straight through ... to block absolutely NOBODY. His friggin job is to MOVE the 230 lbs. LB/DE with the help of the TE and open up that dang lane. Instead, he vacated space and the man he was blocking simply tackled Ajayi right behind James who was cluelessly standing in a 10 yard open space to block ... nobody. This type of buffoonery simply isn't acceptable. Is Ju'Wuan James big enough as a 330 lbs. OT to handle a 230 lbs. LB and move him? I would hope so. Is James' 330 lbs. + TE's 250 lbs. (580 lbs. combined) enough to move a 280 lbs. DE? Well for crying out loud, I hope so! They have an extra 300 lbs. to push!!!!! This kind of incompetence just underlines the real problem ... we get bad players with good measurables. Which brings me to the next and probably biggest problem.
Scouts:
We simply cannot scout OL. The only ones we've had success scouting are first rounders, and as James shows ... we're not even great at that. Then we have the health issues with Pouncey and to a lesser extent James. Sure, Tunsil was a great pick, but we got lucky ... and even he isn't playing well at the moment. We need to find players with certain characteristics that do NOT include length and foot quickness. Yes, those are important things ... but we keep making the exact same mistake with OL over and over and over again. At least try a guy like Asiata ... he can open a friggin hole. We need our scouts to "get it." Because they do not get it now.
