So much for the thread saying we would get him

"Saints re-signed RT Zach Strief to a five-year contract.

Strief was our No. 2 tackle still available, behind only Donald Penn. The 30-year-old veteran is coming off his best NFL season, as he started 15 games for the Saints while allowing just four sacks and five quarterback hits. The re-signing is excellent news for Drew Brees, as the 6'7/320 Strief has emerged as an elite pass blocker. He'll bookend with exciting left tackle prospect Terron Armstead."

yeah, unless he is taking minimum I dont see how they did it...

5 years, 5 million. $250 guaranteed. That's about all the Saints can afford right now with their cap situation. Interesting to see how Mickey Loomis is going to work that situation.

Good, we all knew this was coming, now we can put this to bed and move on.

The speculation is that he took a very friendly upfront contract in order to help the cap this year in exchange for a deal that he could retire a Saint.

The guy was upfront and honest about his desire to stay with the Saints. He didn't waste ours', or another team's, time by visiting to just use them for negotiations. I respect that.

Surprised...only based on the money. Not saying I thought he'd be here, just that I didn't think he'd be there.

i really wanted striefb

I guess that leaves Clabo or Winston to be our RT next year, which I'm fine with if we have Dallas Thomos or another draft pick developing behind them. Maybe the plan is to wait for more cuts to sign our RT.

The Saints are up against the cap this year, but may not be in future years, so it's possible he signed a deal that counts vet minimum against the cap this year and balloons disproportionately in future years with guaranteed money. He still gets paid. Just has to wait for it.

The deal is 20.5mill for 5 years so about 4.125mill a year....if it's back loaded his cap number this year might be pretty small.

Ozzy rules!!

Exactly. Just because they are against the cap this year doesn't mean they are next year or in other future years. He must have a really small cap number this year, with larger numbers in the next couple years.

Streif's contract will be heavily backloaded. That's the only way they can afford it.

And just so you know - Strief married a New Orleans girl with a big family all in the area and has business interests in N.O. He'll finish his career as a Saint and live there post career. It's weird to hear but with some guys it isn't just about the money.
