Seems I've started something of a controversy on the other side of The Herald website by writing that I want to see more points, more production out of the Dolphins offense this season.
I didn't think anyone would not want that.
And yet there are foofs readers commenting below the column saying really stupid illogical things like, "all I want is no-mistake offense and great defense," or "The Dolphins didn't win the Super Bowl with a great offense," which is patently false because the offense that won back-to-back Super Bowls for Miami included five Hall of Famers.
I think there's also somebody below the column saying, "It's no sin to punt." The guy's name is Dave W., I think. Anyway ...
The fact is the Dolphins do have a tougher schedule this year and must be better on offense to meet that schedule's challenges. How can you not agree with me on that?
I spoke privately with Coach Tony Sparano as part of my legwork for this column. (Yeah, some columnists actually talk to people before they write.) And yes, the subject of the quarterback came up. And yes, the subject of the quarterback's arm strength came up.

Salguero is only stating what is patently true. But Penny lovers [homers] desperately want to deny. I've seen more denial on this board regarding Penny's limitations than anything EVER.

Maybe a few Obamites who passionately still think O is still a pristine pure messiah. But I digress.

Salguero is being a non-homer writer and stating only what we already knew Sparano had said: He was very aware of how Penny's arm limited the offense. Now he says "he can make the throws we need him to make." But there is a read between the lines implication: parse that statement: there are throws he cannot make. The Wildcat is part of the solution.

As will be Chris Williams.

IF the Phins can average 10-18 yards better on KR this year, it will immensely help Penny. If his average drive start is closer to the 35 than the 20, he can dink and dunk across mid-field and win the all important FP battle.

The Wildcat and Chris Williams and Teddy Ginn... to a lesser degree Bess, w. grocery getter catches near the LOS. And a VERY EXPENSIVE OL. The TEAM will help Penny be successful enough as I QB, I hope.

Sparano is all about counting the yards - hidden yardage being a topic he constantly brings up and the translation to points on the board.

I agree with LD7 in Chris Williams being a huge help in this hidden yardage/field position battle.

One thing to note, Sparano did mention that he liked that Henne was able to get chunks of yards last preseason game. In other words, the offense was able to grab these "yards" more readily and that of course is a huge burden relieved. With Pennington, it is chore bordering on a strategically grueling chess game to obtain these yards. Fortunately Pennington is smart enough to capitalize on an offensive game plan that highlights his strengths. On the other hand with Henne there is plenty of room for boom - without the trickery, but also increased room for bust. I assume that is what they will be evaluating today, how easily can Henne move the offense?

If a lot of you really want Salguero gone, what you have to do, is not click on his stories. Any click on one of his stories gives him ammunition to say, "look, fans are reading my stories." If we don't do that, he can't say that.

Problem with that is Salguero's stories are like a horrible automobile accident. You know it is going to be messy and bad but for some reason you just have to look.

That's fine, but just realize that you're contributing to him having a job. He's going to be able to go to his boss and quantify how much his stories are read. His boss isn't going to care if you agreed with him, or if what he said was idiotic.

Field goals suck.

Sorry, but I gotta agree with Armando once in a while, guess it will be this article. (In part at least)

If we dont get the ball in the endzone it will be a very long season.

The biggest thing to mention on this subject is Sparano's comments and then it doesnt matter what a columnist or a fan says.

Sparano:
"It don't think it's legitimate. I really don't," Sparano replied. "The throws we need our quarterback to make, Chad Pennington can make every one of them. I mean, he can throw the deep ball. He's done that in ballgames for us. He's done it out here on the practice field. The intermediate stuff, the 18- to 22-yard stuff, he can throw. And he throws the ball up and down the seam as well as any quarterback in this league. And that's where you're finding yards in those areas of the field. I feel like that guy that can throw it the length of the field sometimes, that might be kind of overrated."
Does it a matter what anyone else thinks?

Field goals do suck but I would not worry about it too much in preseason. these games are watered down and dont count. The league has turned preseason into a circus. Preseason games are just test runs to try plays and players out nothing more.
