So do you still think that this scheme does not require a great cover guy? Or does it matter that, with your thinking, the opponent will score on two deep passes a game? BTW, maybe you forgot to witness the box scores after last weeks game? You know, the same game that Madison led the team in tackles?

I'm not worried Sam will be fine. He's the most talented corner we got. I'll leave the hard core tackling to ZT and Crowder
 
If he hadn't missed that tackle in pre-season this subject would rarely be brought up...Criticizing Sam Madison for his Tackling is like criticizing Jason Taylor for his cover skills. Sam Madison is still an elite Corner and there are 31 other teams in the NFL who would love to have him I guarandamntee you!:shakeno:
 
If I'm the opposing OC, I will make Sam Madison play run support. I'm running at him every chance I get.
 
Seau's move to WLB was a run defense move to help Madison. Spragen was not getting it done as most of the long runs in preseason were to Madison's side where he failed to contain, got block, or just had no help from the LBs.

Madison outplayed Surtain last year in terms of coverage. & I agree, those stupid 15 yard unnecessary roughness penalties kill me.
 
We shouldnt even be expecting Madison to be an excellent tackler.. let the defensive line and the linebackers and the safeties worry about gettin the tackles.. As long as he keeps covering WR's like a blanket, I have no problem with him being a below average tackler

Sam Madison--statistics

Yeah it is easy to say that maybe I saw a missed tackle in preseason, and that is why I think he can’t tackle. Or it could also be that being a Fins fan from Boston, I get to see a championship team each week as well as my own team on the NFL Sunday Ticket. The differences the past few seasons has been night and day. No shock there. It is the little things that make a big difference. Like when a CB comes up and tackles through the ball.

I would like to suggest a few stats to show you some comparisons:

2003 INTs/Tackles
Ty Poole 6/70, Ty Law 6/86, Pat Surtain 7/72, Sam Madison 3/53

2004 INTs/Tackles
Ty Poole 1/14, Ty Law 1/33, Asante Samuel 1/38, Randall Gay 2/39, Pat Surtain 4/76, Sam Madison 0/57

And the Pats had tons of interchangeable parts with Poole and Law going down, and Gay and Samuel playing bigger roles.

So, if your contention is that he doesn’t need to tackle to be an effective corner, then certainly he is making his presence felt in the passing game. How many picks last year? Zero? Troy Brown had 3 picks for the Pats, and he is a receiver by trade. Sam played all season, while these other guys, along with rejects such as Earthwind Moreland and Hank Poteat are out there fitting into a system.

I hope Saban can get Madison’s attention early on.

I think that this bubble period would have been mighty interesting had Will Poole not injured himself, as he could be the physical corner that this defense needs.

Due to the schemes that Saban will introduce, a great cover guy is not necessarily what the Fins need. The oposing QBs should have less time and more confusion with their first reads.

His tackling ability has always been questioned. This isn't anything new or unexpected...In fact, in one of the recent articles in one of the papers, HE even said that tackling was a deficiency of his...the fact is, he was a perfect CB for the Wanny press coverage scheme...How he does with this scheme is something that we will have to wait and see about...My feeling was that since Saban knew he could not release Madison this year due to the cap hit, and he was going to lose Surtain, he felt that Madison would adjust, for this year enough that he Poole (assumingly starting opposite Madison) would work well enough until such time that he could get a CB more of his liking...That would free Daniels up to play either FS or 3rd CB...positions he excelled at at LSU...but with Poole's injury and the fact that none of the FAs brought in stepped up to the plate, Daniels was forced into the CB spot...If Daniels had excelled at CB, then the tandem of Poole and Daniels would have been our guys...If Madison caught on well enough and was ablt to hold down the other CB spot, then Daniels would have made a good FS...Now, IF Poole is able to come back after the 6th week of the season, then he probably fills the 3rd CB spot until next year...(allowing us to work him back into shape more slowly...)
 
The coach had to keep Madison this year. Most likely he will be gone next year in a trade. Ideally it would happen before the draft as next year's draft looks really deep. Hopefully Sam plays really well this year and we can get a decent pick for him after the season, say a 3rd or 4th rounder.
 
Wow I am full this morning. Must have been the several servings of crow that Sam fed to me yesterday.

Hope this is the "new" Sam Madison. Tackling was really good and coverage was first rate.

AMEN. Wow did Madison show up and prove me wrong yesterday. He played really well. I almost like eating crow when this happens. It means the team plays better and whatever is better for the team winning, I am all for.
