According to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, the Packers are "trying to give" free agent CB Sam Shields a deal worth less than $6 million annually.

Shields is believed to be seeking $7 million annually, so there's a fairly significant gap to be bridged. A deal signed by Bears CB Tim Jennings in January was worth $5.6 million per year, and Rapoport says that's where GM Ted Thompson values Shields. Shields' agent has made it clear through media reports that his client does not intend to re-sign with Green Bay before March 11.

If we cant get a deal done with grimes I'd consider shields for sure. Anyone know what grimes is looking for money wise?i can't see giving him much more then 3 yrs 25 mil when u could go after shields for 4 yr 28, he is not as good or a sure fit but is a young solid consolation prize

I was dying for us to take him with a 7th round pick the year he came out. I have no idea if we ever tried to sign him as an UDFA, but GB got an undrafted gem in Shields. You could tell he had the talent to be a good corner as soon as he shifted to the position his last year at UM. He was inconsistent, but made some very good plays and was a surprisingly solid tackler for a longtime WR. He has become a very good pro, but is he really worth $7 million per???

Sam Shields is a good player but he strikes me as a number 2 corner.

Jairus Byrd May be free also..

"Buffalo Bills safety Jairus Byrd is one of the top players scheduled to hit the free agent market in free agency. He is arguably the second best safety in the NFL, behind Seattle Seahawks' Earl Thomas. On the open market, Byrd will likely draw significant interest.

The Bills have discussed a contract extension with Byrd, but are unlikely to agree to one before free agency and are unlikely to use the franchise tag on him, according to Joe Buscalgia of WGR550.com. He says that it is unlikely that Byrd will re-sign with the Bills."

Grimes still needs to be our #1 CB, I we must resign him. I wouldn't mind cutting Patterson and then add a couple million to the 5 we would save and sign Shields.

I'm just getting nervous that grimes wants to much money. With the season he had and wanting one last good contract I could see him looking for something in the 10 mil+ range. Don't see us doing that.

I would also look hard at verner from Tennessee just threw shields out there cause he's one of the better cbs available and his agent has made his asking price public

Oh did we ever,
Shields’ father said his son worked out for the Dolphins, but Miami made no offer. “ Tony Sparano asked Sam the name of the defensive backs coach [ Todd Bowles] and Sam didn’t know,” Samuel Shields said. “Sparano then started yelling and said, ‘You failed the test already!’”

Shields AND Grimes and this becomes the best CB duo in the NFL and easily the best since Madison Surtain. Wishful thinking however...

I remember this! F*****g morons! Things like this is why The Meatball will never be more than an assistant coach and Ireland will never be a G, again

Grimes is top priority. However, if we are looking at $5M/season for Dimitri Patterson and probably $4M/ season for Nolan Carroll, does it make sense to pay a bit more and get Sam Shields?

It would definitely make more sense, but I don't think Patterson is back at his current term anyway. I've been playing with the idea of having Patterson take a paycut (he has no security in his contract and I'm sure some guaranteed money would be good for him), letting Carroll walk and bringing in more of a slot guy. Captain Munnerlyn or Tarrell Brown I think are solid options. Then you have Patterson starting opposite Grimes and you have Jamar Taylor slotted in behind him. Patterson's got an injury history so Taylor still would have a shot to make an impact without being thrust into a starting role. We can do better than Carroll.

Let Patterson walk. He misses too many games with injuries. Give the money to Grimes and hope last years rookies can do something.
Grimes/Carrol, and the 2nd year players.
