OK this is just another one of those write ups from a practice basically played in underoos so take things as they are. It's just a way to see some players and check out how their coming along in their schemes.
First thing to take note of is that I would not worry to much about who is 1st team, 2nd team, or 3rd because it's now obvious to me that Cam wants to see different players work with different units. He's also resting a lot of the players for the team drills. Like Zach, JT, and Traylor.
The Qb's
Green showed that he is familiar with this offense. On a red zone play he had to know exactly what the Wr was supposed to do because the route consisted of starting out as a skinny post, then a cut towards the flag, with one more cut to the back corner of the endzone. He made a quick fake back to the post, and cleared the safety, then threw a perfect over the shoulder pass to the Wr. One heck of a nice play. He still had to be coached some on the terms of some plays but I like what I see so far. Nothing was perfect, and there is some timing issues here and there but overall, after just two days, the Qb position is looking better than it has in years!
Lemon had his moments today, he did not start out great but nothing can be perfect I guess. He underthrew Chambers and missed Ginn on two early routes. I won't lay total blame on him though because Ginn had a defender draped all over him. He also threw an int on the first play of full team redzone drills. Roth jumped the pass perfectly and headed the other way. Now Lemon made a great recognition of Ginn who's route started out as a midrange out. Once he got to the outside of Jason Allen, he was gone, and Lemon laid the ball right on his shoulder for what would have been a 70 yd TD.
Beck was not quite as accurate as he was yesterday but once again he showed me something new. He read a blitz perfectly and hit his TE but it was dropped. He underthrew a couple of passes today, but did throw a nice TD to Derek Hagan. They used a little more pressure on the Qb's today so it is understandable to a point that the Qb's, including Beck, who is new to this offense, might make a mistake or two.
Hamdan may be fodder but he's showing that he can throw the ball, and knows the offense fairly well. In the redzone drills, his very first pass was a 20 yard post, throw perfectly to Kelly Campbell, who was just ahead of the defender.
How about some Wr's
My hats are off to Derik Hagan. This dude runs the best routes on the entire team (in my opinion). He also caught every pass within his reach today. His cuts are so crisp, and always to the weakness of the Defense. Hopefully he continues to use his hands, and keeps catching passes like a fly in fly paper.
Hazakim is also a very good route runner. He is the one who caught that TD pass from Green in the corner of the endzone. It looked like he may have tweaked his ankle during practice because I noticed him limping a bit.
Ginn was having a little trouble with the redzone stuff because he was getting jammed a lot at the line, but he does have a pretty good, quick outside move that could counter a lot of jams if he is consistent at it. You try to jam him, and if he gets that move on you, he's pretty open. That's going to mean a safety will have to keep a watchful eye on him at the beginning of every play. That 70 yard TD was not exactly an out pattern but more like him fading towards it, and once he got his inside shoulder by Allen, he just turned on his jets and that was it! Allen is by no means slow either but he was soundly outran. Ginn is also being used by flooding one side of the field with three receivers, having him on the outside. The snap has him just bolting across the field, while all the flow is going the opposite way. Having the TE, or Rb running his lane about 2 yards beyond Ginns makes it nearly impossible for the defender to follow him. Ginn ended up wide open, as a matter of fact the entire right side of the field was cleared but he dropped the pass which was right to him. I'm sure many people have seen this play on his YouTube. I like this play, as did Linehan when he was here. Ginn also got by Daniel's on Greens first play in the redzone drills. The pass floated just a bit, and it was sort of a fade pattern but the height of which it was thrown and with the wind catching it a bit, it allowed Daniel's to make a nice recovery, and a nice Int as well.
Campbell is also doing pretty good. He's staying healthy so far too. I imagine that it will be him and Hakim fighting it out for the 5th slot, unless they plan to keep 6?
I also think they might have two pretty good prospects for Europe. Malone is also a pretty good route runner, and Sutton actually looked pretty darn good in the redzone work.
The Oline was Carey, Liweinski, Hadnot, and Shelton.
Nothing really to say about the line because of the fact that they are not hitting hard at the line at all right now. They all were working on picking up stunts by the defense for the better part of 30-40 minutes though.
OK let me relax for a few, and I'll add just a little more about the Rb's, TE's and some defense later on after I eat, and I'll also try and answer any questions if asked...
Hope everyone enjoys the reading...
Peace out
