Adam Schefter has just stated on NFL network that Culpepper could likely wind up in Tampa Bay now that Jake Plummer has officially not reported to camp. Plummer was to report at 6pm yesterday and the Bucs can now attempt to recover over 7 million in signing bonuses off of him and they will attempt to fine him 14 grrrr for every day of camp he misses. Schefter said even when Plummer does officially file his retirement papers that the bucs will not be eager to sign them. As a result, along with the 7.2 mil they freed up from cutting Simeon Rice, Culpepper will be a likely target according to Schefter.

Pretty classless move on the Bucs part.

Plummer said "don't trade for me, I don't want to play". They trade for him anyway. He retires (albeit unofficially). And now they want to go after signing bonus that they never paid and doesn't even count towards their cap. Ridiculous.

I still think Culpepper is a bad fit for that offense. I don't think there's anything to Schefter's report (though he's still top notch in my book).

If it is true it is pretty classless on behalf of the Bucs, but you can bet your bottom dollar it will come back and haunt us, sometime in the future. And no matter what we think, supporters of other teams will just say it is what we deserved. We are on a hiding to nothing IMO.

Plummer should have just retired, and the Bucs are just treating this like a business, we did the same to Ricky didn't we?

I just don't see trading for a guy, he never plays a down, and you get a 7million dollar payday even though he never actually got a paycheck from the bucs?

Why not, C-pep rode Saban out of town, he may as well ride Gruden down the road as well.....

Gruden has an unhealthy love of stockpiling QBs. I'm not sure Culpepper is right for that offense either.

i live in tampa and they don't even want him...personally i don't even think they want gruden in town anymore either...

Uh, didn't we do the exact same thing with Ricky's bonus when he "retired"?

why would tampa need daunte though..lets see they have garcia and sims alredy battling for starter then gradakowski(sp)then like 4 other guy behind them. doesn't make sense to me. i still have a feeling we will see dc in st.louis with bulger still not reporting to camp.
does anyone know what thats about? after bulger there isn't much in the way of competion there in st.louis not only is linehan familiar with daunte so are half the players since they came from miami.
i could be wrong but dc's best bet is to land in st.louis at least there if healthy he would have a good chance to start. anyone else agree?

Difference being is that Ricky actually played for us, Plummer told the Broncos and Bucs that he didn't want to play anymore, that he was going to retire, and the Broncos traded him and now the Bucs get 7million from a guy who never played a down for them out of the player's own pocket?

I could see the Broncos saying that, but not the Bucs.

Heck Jake could smoke a blunt, fail a drug test, and just run out his contract failling drug tests, the Bucs would be stuck.

And DC with a bad wheel on the turf in St louis? "maybe" but only if extreme desperation sets in.

Thats the part that makes no sense at all, Jake could show up and really do a number on the bucs organazation if they tried to take money from him like that. Im thinking the story is incorrect. Jake could take one good hit and cry soft tissue injury and stick the bucs with the entire contract. They would have to pay him while he spent his practices getting heayt therapy and massages.

It was a shrewd business move on the part of the Bucs. Either the Broncos would be collecting that signing bonus, or someone else...you don't retire early with that much unamortized bonus remaining and get away with it. Barry Sanders proved that. He had to pay money back to the Lions. The Bucs traded a pick to the Broncos for the right to collect their debt for them. It's not a classless move, it's banking.

ok so if not st louis for daunte what about detroit? o wait dome means turf field there too. but matt millen just might be a animal cracker shy of a circus to ponder the idea if he wasn't so high on kitna.
