The Miami Dolphins are guaranteed to have a different defense in 2017, and their roster, as of now, remains the same as 2016. With Vance Joseph heading to the Denver Broncos to become the Head Coach, Adam Gase promoted LB coach Matt Burke to the defensive coordinator position.

Gase was careful to include Burke while naming his staff last year, claiming Burke was destined for a head coach job in 3-4 years. In the mean time, he will get a shot at his highest position yet, and will be tasked with turning around a Dolphins defense that finished 2016 ranked 30th in stopping the run.

That number came largely in part to the Dolphins weak play at linebacker. Apart from Kiko Alonso, Miami's top free agent last off-season, the linebackers looked abysmal and inconsistent all year long (even Alonso showed flashes of inconsistency). As a result, look for Burke and the Dolphins to turn to the draft and free agency for new players.

Burke has already stated that he wants an "attacking" defense, and to have that, you need speed at the position. Neville Hewitt has great speed, and is it not a liability in coverage. That being said, he often has trouble wrapping up tackles. I expect him to continue to grow this off-season, and come back next year ready to challenge for significant playing time.

One guy to keep a look on moving into the 2017 NFL Draft is Vanderbilt Commodores OLB Zach Cunningham. Cunningham has great speed and is very good in coverage, using his long frame to break up passes.

You gotta love these articles that contradict themselves. We need speed...play X has speed....BUT he can't tackle. So which is it?

Such an obvious need. At least it's clear what the weaknesses are. The average fan can see it.

Miami needs to find quick linebackers who can tackle to offset that quick passing game that destroyed this team last year at the hands of New England and Pittsburgh. If you can limit those three yard passes to three yard gains they won't kill you.

I have to laugh at some of this people who don't really know the team. Kiko Alonso was our top free agent last off season? Hmmmm, I thought we got him on a trade but I could be wrong....smh

Ozzy rules!!

Not just speed but size and physicality. We need some 250+ pound guys who can run and hit. Don't need 230 pound finesse guys.

at LB?!?

Where is one to find these magical playmaking Green Giants w/ track speed?

Just like that rare size/speed combination. I would say the instincts and game smarts are probably even more important. I would never call myself an X's and O's guy. But, I surprise myself often when I see a formation and can tell it's a run and where it's going.

Further based on the LB/DE/DT alignment. I can tell if it's going to be a small or significant gain. Now for the life of me, I don't understand how an NFL LB or DE can't see some of the plays coming their way.

Mind boggling!

Team has been saying that they want an attacking defense for years. When will it ever come to fruition?
