Scouting Adam Gase

An Ever Evolving Offensive Scheme that Adapts to his Personnel

It was that diversity of experience that shapes Gase’s offensive scheme now, which you cannot neatly fit into one package.

Looking over film of the offenses that Gase ran in Denver and Chicago, you see concepts from a number of different offensive systems. One minute the Broncos or Bears would call a Peyton Manning staple: the dig concept; the next, it’s a West Coast offense staple with the quick slants; and the next minute, its deep vertical passes from the Mike Martz/Air Coryell school of thought. Mixed in, you see some bubble screens, and of course, even a little no huddle, up-tempo offense (but relax, Eagles fans, it is used sporadically, not as an overriding philosophy).

The fact that Gase has married so many different passing concepts into one hodgepodge of an offense speaks to one of his greatest strengths: his ability to adapt to his personnel.

Nice positive article, wish it pointed some negative as well.

We have needed this for a while:
As Gase explained to Jenny Vrentas of SI.com: “The most important thing that I have learned in this whole experience since 2011 is every guy is different and you need to adjust your offense to who you have. Every team is functioning around the quarterback.”

Too many coaches on this Dolphins team have tried to fit round pegs in square holes. This would be breath of fresh air.

Thanks for the info guys. I'm coming around on this pick. Assuming of course he takes the job when it's offered and doesn't pull a Fisher.

Sold on him as an OC? I'm getting there.

Sold on him as a HC? Based on what?

Just because someone is a good coordinator doesn't mean he's a good head coach.

Every head coach was a coordinator at some point. It's a gamble yes but Gase is a bright young football mind.

Obviously. But my point is that I have yet to see anything that points to his HC capabilies. Any time anyone asks "why do you think he would be a good head coach?", everyone replies with his OC skills. No one has said anything about his leadership skills, game management skills, ability to lead a staff, how he would address the defense... all the skills a head coach needs beyond the x's and o's of a coordinator. They are two different jobs that require two different skillsets. I'm NOT saying he doesn't have the HC skillset, but I can find them on his resume, and that has me worried. Again, I'm not even talking about HC experience. I just want to see something that makes me believe he has the skills to be a HC beyond the x's and o's. So far, I'm not seeing it, and that is why I don't think he is a good hire. Would love to be proven wrong.

Love this quote from the MMQB article:

“They’ve got good players, and he knows what to do with them. He puts guys in position to have success. It would be easy to do the same stuff over and over, but each week he’s going to create.”

Exact opposite of "do it my way" Lazor.

Of course you are. It's life as a Dolphins fan: Talk yourself into the team's decisions...

I have not done personal research, so I am going to stipulate that the content of the article is accurate. If Coach Gase can tailor an offensive scheme to fit the strengths of his players, it is reasonable to assume he can do the same with his coaching staff. I expect he will want a talented defensive coordinator that can take more of the load. I expect him to find a talented OC that is willing to be directed. I would expect Coach Gage to be involved heavily in game planning and ensuring the the offense effectively uses the skills of his QBs strengths. He knows how to make game time adjustments, and I would expect him to hold his OC accountable to those adjustments.

Lots of great information. I like the fact that he worked under Nick Saban. I know how a lot of fans here feel about Saban, but honestly given time I think he would have turned Miami around. I have been advocating for an experienced coach like Mike Shanahan or Tom Coughlin, but hoping if Adam Gase is hired that the Dolphins finally hit on their long search for the next young Don Shula.

Actually some other posters on the site pointed out some of Gase's positives I was unaware of and though not my first or even second choice if we go the coordinator route instead of an experienced HC he's the guy.
You are right that whom ever was the choice I would have hoped he does well.
