Strengths: Better athlete than most think. Has good closing burst to the quarterback and ball carrier. Is a powerful tackler that will wrap up in space. Has excellent instincts and run/pass recognition. Does a very good job of reading his keys and finding the ball. Is disciplined and will keep his run-leverage. Has adequate size. Does a solid job of getting underneath OL pads and shows excellent power at the POA. Is a feisty run defender that will never give up on a play. Will find the ball quickly, shows great pursuit skills, and is a powerful tackler. Hands are outstanding. Has outstanding anticipation skills and good initial quickness. Comes out of his stance quickly and with good leverage. He is a quicker than fast pass rusher with a relentless motor. Is at his best using power moves as a pass rusher. Has good COD skills and shows the ability to use double moves to get back inside.
Weaknesses: He lacks ideal size and base. Can be very effective when on the move but bigger OT's in the NFL will be able to engulf him if they can get their hands on him. Lack of ideal top end speed is a concern. Might have a much more difficult time bending the corner in the NFL. Only time he has trouble in terms of his run/pass recognition is when he becomes over-aggressive and plays out of control. Temper has gotten him into some trouble during his career.
Overall: Roth began his career at linebacker but moved to defensive end as a sophomore in 2002 and was a fulltime starter from that point on. Roth developed into one of the top playmaking defensive linemen in the country as a junior in 2003, when he finished with 51 total tackles, 16 for loss and 12 sacks. He had another 49 tackles, 15 TFL and eight sacks as a senior in 2004. Despite facing constant double teams as a senior in 2004, Roth's production did not dip. Roth is a tenacious player with adequate size, good strength and an outstanding motor. He is tough and active versus the run, and he has excellent instincts and closing quickness as a pass rusher. Roth's lack of top-end speed and his occasional loss of temper could cause him to slip more than some think on draft day. However, Roth still grades out as one of the top-five DE's in the 2005 class and should wind up coming off the board late in the first round.
