Scouts aplenty at Dolphins-Jags game

By Ben Volin | Sunday, August 17, 2008, 03:35 PM

There were scouts from nine different NFL teams sitting in the pressbox last night at Jacksonville Memorial Stadium — seven AFC teams and two NFC. Five of the teams represented are on the Dolphins’ schedule this year.
Perhaps the scouts came to last night’s game to take a look at Chad Pennington running the Dolphins offense for the first time. Maybe they were checking out Ricky Williams, or scouting a player on the Jaguars’ defensive line. Maybe they were in town and just wanted a free hot dog.
But chances are more than one, and probably several, were at last night’s game to take a look at the two quarterbacks at the bottom of the Dolphins’ depth chart, John Beck and Josh McCown.
Most of the scouts in attendance represented teams that are thin at quarterback.
  • Minnesota: Already was on shaky ground with Tarvaris Jackson, Gus Frerotte and Brooks Bollinger, and now Jackson has a sprained MCL.
  • San Diego: Has Billy Volek and Charlie Whitehurst behind Philip Rivers (and Randy Mueller, the man who drafted Beck last year, is now an executive with the Chargers).
  • Indianapolis: Peyton Manning is out all preseason with a knee infection, and the Colts are stuck with Jim Sorgi and Quinn Gray for now.
  • Kansas City: The Chiefs are a mess at quarterback, with Brodie Croyle trying to prove he is the QB of the future and Damon Huard trying to prove he still belongs in the league.
  • Baltimore: Cam Cameron’s new team drafted Joe Flacco, but perhaps Cam wants to take Beck back under his wings.
The Bills, Jets, Steelers and Giants were also at the game. Who knows, maybe they were taking a look at Beck and McCown, too?
While Tony Sparano has said the team may keep four quarterbacks, it is likely they are trying to salvage any sort of value for Beck or McCown and obtain a draft pick. Worse comes to worse, one of them could be released on or before cut-down day, Aug. 30.
But Sparano didn’t showcase either Beck or McCown Saturday night. Pennington played the first three series, finishing 5-of-6 for 55 yards, and Chad Henne finished the game, almost three quarters worth.
The same thing happened in practice last week, when Beck and McCown were clipboard holders while the Chads took almost all the reps.
If McCown is discarded, he goes down as a $2.5 million mistake. That’s how much guaranteed money they gave him this offseason as a free agent signing.
But if Beck is the one to go, he may go down as one of the Dolphins’ biggest draft busts of all time, though that’s probably a harsh assessment given the difficult circumstances he played under last year and the regime change from Mueller/Cameron to Parcells/Ireland/Sparano.
It is amazing to think that within a 16 month span, Beck could go from 40th overall selection and Miami’s quarterback of the future to being waived out of training camp.

Thi smight be small to some of you but it's huge for me. This article suggest they were there to scout our QB's. I think it's because we will actually be cutting some serious talent. Miami is loaded. The other teams know we brought in quality players like Foster that we will not be able to keep. Maybe they were scouting our WR corp maybe EW is "tradeable". I don't know, but what i do know is that other teams are attracted to our talent and this gives me a very optimistic look on this season.

Playoffs is a very big possibility for us this year. I know we all have been let down the last 8 years.....That is over now. Click Clack!

It would be ironic if the scouts we're there to see Beck and McCown, since they didn't play. I'm not sure how we'd create a (more) demand for them if they don't play. I would bet after the Jags game the team is more comfortable with Henne and may play Beck and McCown in the next games to do that.

Only 2 QBs on the roster? I just can't see that, but who knows.

umm..... nobody was looking at beck or mccown, i promise, neither of them played a down.

maybe thats why we didn't play them, because we knew we were there and didn't want them to lose any more value

I'm guessing they were there to check out the QBs. Maybe possible cuts like Patrick Cobbs, Renaldo Hill, and Rod Wright as well. Beck was probably the primary person they wanted to scout. Too bad he didn't play.

Shame Beck didn't get more playing time to show the scouts what he can do

Wow. Are you serious man? This team is loaded? :sidelol: . I love the fins, but I also know a little about the game of football. A team that is loaded is Dallas, or New England. Not Miami.

Playoffs are not a very big possibility for us this year. You are setting yourself up to punch walls and make hate posts by midseason. It's nice to be optimistic, but it really helps to balance it out with a dose of reality too.

I wouldn't put Dallas and NE in the same category. Dallas is loaded, the Packers are another team that is young and loaded with talent. NE is old and getting older by the minute. They are on their downside & I think that Tampa game shows that to some degree.

They were not here to scout our QB castoffs. There were here to get a preliminary read on the new-look Dolphins with Pennington at the helm. Why would they show up to a preseason game to scout QBs that got virtually no reps at practice and are on the verge of being cut or traded from a team that went 1-15 last year?

And to the OP: Did you really just end your post with "Click-clack"?

Not really. It was preseason. Brady didn't play. New England is still loaded until proven otherwise. Regardless, that was not the point of my post.

Loaded?.....whoa what is your definition of loaded?...1-15, or UDFA pickups

They wanted to see if Beck would fumble the gatorade handed to him on the sidelines

Playoffs are not a very big possibility for us this year. You are setting yourself up to punch walls and make hate posts by midseason. It's nice to be optimistic, but it really helps to balance it out with a dose of reality too.

Obviously we have some talent on our roster with that many scouts at our games. I do believe we are loaded with talent. Look at the depth we currently have on the Offensive Line, at Full back. Either Reagan or Boomer will be available. Look at DT. Solai might be talent being scouted. Peep at DE Rod Wright might peek plenty of curiosity. We got atleast 3 WR that would make decent slot recievers in the league to include Bess, Foster, Kircus, Camarillo, or even EW. QB has Beck and Mccown man I could go on forreal....but the truth of the matter is that Parcell brings in talent some of that talent will get dropped and the scouts are here to scoop it up.

You are far from the only person here with football knowledge however novice we both are....Im sure those scouts at our game know more than both of us combined,

As far as not making the playoffs this year.....Im got enough faith to put $2,000 up right now in paypal.....You?
