Cornerback: The Dolphins finished with the No. 4 defense in the league, but only notched eight interceptions. Miami had the third-most sacks in the NFL, but struggled in coverage. The Dolphins have three adequate corners, but should focus on acquiring a shutdown athlete who can match up with the opponent's best receiver and give more flexibility to the overall defensive scheme.
Defensive tackle: The Miami defensive line was very solid in 2006, but the group is aging. The top four defensive tackles are in their 30s, and two will be in their late 30s next season. Three of the four defensive tackles are free agents this offseason, and there is a good chance the Dolphins will need to find at least one big body to shore up the middle of the defense.
Offensive line: Miami moved its linemen around after its bye in Week 8, and the offensive line played better. Damion McIntosh was moved to left tackle after L.J. Shelton couldn't get it done, but the Dolphins still need to improve the pass protection in 2007. McIntosh may test the market as a free agent this offseason, and Miami may not spend a lot to bring him back. Look for Miami to re-sign guard Toniu Fonoti in the offseason and target any possible left tackle prospects in free agency or the 2007 draft.
Quarterback: This is still one of the big questions for Miami in 2007. The top two quarterbacks (Daunte Culpepper and Joey Harrington) combined for 14 touchdowns and 18 interceptions, averaging a 72.6 quarterback rating. Former coach Nick Saban inserted Cleo Lemon late in the season, but he may not have enough talent to grab the starting role. Look for the Dolphins' front office and new head coach to address this crucial position. Kicker: The Dolphins lost seven games by 10 points or fewer last year. Three of those losses were by a field goal or less. The kicking game can determine many close contests, and Miami rarely had the edge in this phase of the game. Veteran kicker Olindo Mare struggled in 2006, missing several crucial field goal attempts. Mare only hit 72 percent of his attempts and a dismal 55 percent over 40 yards. The Dolphins will take a hard look at Mare, as his field goal percentage dropped significantly from previous seasons. If they don't feel good about what Mare has left in the tank, they may add another kicker in 2007.
It's an ESPN Insider article http://insider.espn.go.com/nfl/insider/news/story?id=2773475

What do you all think? I think it's pretty damn accurate. And it appears they list top five needs therefore Chambers critics/haters can calm down on why WR is not up there

I would rank them
QB
OL
CB
LB
K
DT
DE

The path of the draft will be determined, (i know im stating the obvious here) by what we do in FA.

possibly swap the CB and OL positions, can go either way IMO

You called it...that the WR position was not identified tells me the author probably read about the Dolphins and didn't actually watch them play or belongs to the "Ain't Chambers Fault" fan club.

Wait...what's this thread about again? Finsfan1984's avatar has totally thrown my thinking off!

I've been saying our CBs need one shut down corner for a while now. Our defense would have won more games for us last season if not for the constant drives kept alive by big pass plays. We need Nate Clements. Let's get the cuts/restructures done and break bank on the guy.

I don't agree that our DT's need anyhting more than a late 2nd day pick to add a little youthful depth. Other than than, we got 3 young guys in Fred Evans, Kevin Vickerson, and Rodrique Wright that we've drafted. Am I to believe that those guys are all waisted picks? They need more time in the rotation.(Manny Wright is a question mark and not worth depending on if he makes it back it's a bonus.)

OL would be our greatest need if QB wasn't the most important position in football.

Olindo Mare needs to take a pay cut or hit the road.

Well considering we were the only team with 4 receivers to catch 50 balls, I think we are pretty well rounded there at WR. That is one of the positions we need to worry about least.

Biggest needs are:

OL (left side)
CB
OLB
DT
QB (Rookie or insurance policy)

You actually think throwing to a WR 154 times to get 59 catches out of him means we are well rounded...keep dreaming. :shakeno:

I dont really think that a shutdown cb is really the dire secondary need. our problems were more our safeties not making plays. when yeremiah bell was inserted into the starting lineup, everything turned around.

I think that jason allen will be one of the new starters next season. at safety or cb.

also, i dont think that manny wright is that much of a question mark. dolphins "and" manny wright have already stated that he will be there to start the offseason programs with the rest of the team. so i dont see what's so question mark about that?

only real concern i have is losing david bowens. why dont they cut carter by now and re-sign bowens.

I think that gives us even more reason to look for a shutdown CB. With Bell's improved play and if Allen can improve from his rookie season, we're set at S. Whereas, Travis Daniels struggled last year and was hampered with injuries all season, and Will Allen looked confused many times. Were need just one solid starter, I say keep Daniels at #2 and put Allen at nickel. Daniels is young and has experience in this system and I think Allen's inconsistent play warrants him at place in the nickel package.
