Florida ILB Brandon Spikes missed part of last week's Tennessee contest with with tendinitis in his left Achilles tendon and was limping around practice early in the week. Scouts who have passed through UF have left stamping mid-round grades on the senior in large part because of his lack of athletic ability and physical talent.

Just found this on profootballweekly and thought it was something worth noting for all of the people pimping Brandon Spikes. This is not meant to bash him but it something that should be kept in everyone's mind. Apparently his lack of athleticism could leave him out of the first round. The combine will determine his draft status from here on out.

Couldn't agree more, he does alot of things but is generally pretty average across the board, stop mocking him in the first because he'll be lucking to see the 2nd.

Not sure what suddenly opened a few eyes in reguards to Spikes....

...but this has been my line of thinking all along....

He was never an elite prospect IMO....he was never in Rolando McClain's class as a potential NFL linebacker IMO.....but I wouldn't turn my nose up at him in the 2nd round either...

I like his size and he DOES have some intangibles for the position.....experienced...and battle tested in the premier conference in college football....

IMO spikes is overhyped, if you look at his game he looks like crowder at florida? does he not! the point Florida's D-line is so good that it's hard to judge spikes? so far i've watched all there game, theirs very few time he's asked to cover a back, or anything like that! i"m sorry i don't see it! now j. hayden, thats a talent the best Defender florida has IMO(because his requires individual tackling, the speed, the positioning etc! and he dominates that position), spikes can hide, because of that D-Line. Finally i know this is not relevant to this post, but those wanting to draft tebow, are you fing crazy, have you watched tebows game? seriously, the guy runs on 60% of the plays, honestly? more times than not his, "highlights" are more because of bad tackling than his own efforts! You really think thats gonna translate to the NFL? if he's running that much as a "QB" shouldn't tell you all you need to know about his "passing" game as a QB!

Spikes has size, wheels, is a tackling machine and can cover well. I saw him knock Alabama's Andre Smith on his a** last year, impressive. The guy is very good- the problem is that ILB is like interior OL- you better be damn good to warrant a #1 pick. The skill set isn't as demanding as other positions. You better be Mangold good, Grubbs good, Ray Lewis good or Seau good. Rey Rey falling into the 2nd rd has got to tell you something.

McClain is the pick! Do whatever it takes to get him.

I could care less what any scout says i also don't care if he's a 1st round pick or 3rd round pick.

The odds are still very high he'll be starting for some NFL team come next year.

spikes is a MLB - who plays behind DT's - and very marginal ones at that. sure - he gets some help from dunlap and cunningham - but not as much as jones and doe do. and spikes doesn't do much hiding - you don't put up those kind of numbers - on a D stacked with talent - by 'hiding' behind the defensive line. if you're using that argument - who does mcclain play behind? oh yeah - cody. and who does he play next to? oh yeah - hightower. that doesn't fly.

there are very few times i'll say an ILB prospect is a can't miss. the last time i did it was willis - and i don't even remember who before that. in this draft spikes and mcclain are absolutely can't miss prospects - neither are overrated. the size, the speed, the instincts, the hard hitting, the relentlessness ... it's all there. i see both of them as very similar players who will have massive success in the NFL. i want a LB in the first round this year - and both of them are head and shoulders above all of the OLB prospects this year - so we should pick which ever one is left (if any) when we get our turn. if both are gone - i'd like benn. if all three are gone i'll be pissed.

On top of everything else Spikes showed great hands yesterday.

he made that pick 6 look way too easy.

another thing i forgot in my previous post is the gators typically play a 3-3-5 on defense - so that makes it even harder for spikes to 'hide' behind linemen.

dont forget his skills at eye gouging, cheap shotting sob

He is a heck of a player but I would rather have mcclain a far better fit the 3-4 system

That eye gouging crap he pulled was as dirty as it gets.....I mean....just the amount of effort he was putting into it....

He looked like he was trying to hand grab a catfish out of the guys helmet for pete's sake....

And although the officials missed it and it didn't draw a flag.....once the SEC gets a hold of this I think you're going to see some repercussions headed in Spikes direction...
