Hutchinson hit with transition tag not franchise.

Seahawks | Hutchinson to receive transition tag
Thu, 23 Feb 2006 10:09:41 -0800
Mike Sando, of the Tacoma News Tribune, reports the Seattle Seahawks have informed OLG Steve Hutchinson that he will have the team's transition tag placed on him. The team is expected to make an announcement soon.

If I remember correctly that means teams can still offer him a contract, but Seatle gets the chance to match that offer or recieve draft pick compensation. Should we go after him?

He is going to be to expensive and I believe transition means we give up just 1, 1st round pick not two that is required for franchise.

I prefer Bentley.

Bentley will also be tagged
Saints | Team not likely to tag anyone

Mike Triplett, of the New Orleans Times-Picayune, reports New Orleans Saints general manager Mickey Loomis said the Saints are not likely to use a franchise or transition tag on any players this year.

Saints | Team won't tag Bentley
Wed, 22 Feb 2006 19:00:17 -0800

Mike Triplett, of the New Orleans Times-Picayune, reports the New Orleans Saints are not planning to place a franchise or transition tag on free agent OC LeCharles Bentley. He almost certainly will find a new home when the NFL's free agency period begins March 3. "I'm not ruling out the idea of coming back," Bentley said. "But with that being said, New Orleans has had ample opportunity to put their bid on the table. And once the other bids start coming in, I have to make the best decision I can." He was disappointed that the team did not sign him to a long-term contract extension sooner. Bentley, who is now represented by Neil Schwartz, is expected to seek a contract similar to what the Carolina Panthers gave guard Mike Wahle last year, reportedly a five-year deal worth up to $28 million with $11.5 million in bonuses. Saints general manager Mickey Loomis also did not rule out the possibility that the Saints could re-sign Bentley, but they have allowed themselves the possibility to be outbid for his services.

I would rather Bently also. Hutch is good, but I really dont think he is going to leave seattle. I think that is why this tag, not the franchise, cuz they know he wont go anywhere

[mod] Please post in the correct forum. [/mod]

I don't think I am permitted to post a link, but you can find it on the espn front page. As I understand it, the transition tag doesn't stop us from offering a deal to Hutchinson, but the Seahawks will have the chance to match it.

If the Seahawks decline to match it, I think we still have to give up a draft pick to obtain Hutchinson's rights, but the pick is significantly less than a first, if I remember correctly. It's sort of like a watered-down franchise tag.

It's ok to post a link just not the entire article within your post

Thanks for the info!

edit: Also - There is no draft-pick compensation if a transition player ends up signing with another team but they do get a chance to match.

Definately puts us out of the running for Hutchinson. Many teams with more cap room can put up more money. Hutchinson's a great player, but to leave Seattle some team will have to put up "franchise tag" type money. Must be a really big difference between the top 5 and top 10 contracts for Seattle to risk not getting any compensation for Hutchinson.

Having the transition tag could actually be a good thing for us. First off, NO COMPENSATION IS GIVEN TO THE FORMER TEAM. Basically, you work out the contract with the player and they agree. Then, The old team ( Seattle ) is given ten days to math it. If they don't the player is yours. If they do, then the old team retains the rights.

The beauty of this is that old team has to honor the terms of the contract the new team worked out. That means, if you say, put a fat roster bonus on the front end of the deal that the other team simply cannot match for cap reasons, then the player is essentially yours.

This is great news. Bentley being on the open market and Hutchinson possible as well? I can't believe the dumb luck. I think the CBA is scaring some teams from negotiating anything really long term.

I would make Hutchinson priority #2 after Brees. Get Brees and/or Bentley/Hutchinson and you can focus on getting young talent for the defense in the draft. That would be my strategy.

"If a franchised player is signed by another team, the original team has the right to macth the deal and if they don’t they are entitled to two first-round picks as compensation. The original team can also match any offer sheet signed by a transition player, however, if they don’t match there is no compensation."

Looks like I was wrong. We should go after Hutchinson.
