The NHL has suspended Dallas Stars forward Sean Avery indefinitely, pending a hearing with commissioner Gary Bettman.

The Stars' super-pest is being suspended for disparaging remarks he made this morning in reference to Flames defenceman Dion Phaneuf and Phaneuf's girlfriend, actress Elisha Cuthbert, who previously had a relationship with Avery.

"I am really happy to be back in Calgary, I love Canada," Avery said on camera this morning in Calgary. "I just want to comment on how it's become like a common thing in the NHL for guys to fall in love with my sloppy seconds. I don't know what that's about. Enjoy the game tonight."

Avery's hearing will take place in accordance with the NHL Constitution, for conduct "detrimental to the League or game of hockey," the NHL announced.

The NHL shows how much a disgrace it is by suspending a player for comments. The league has really become a joke.

I really didn't see anything wrong with his comments, actually found them a bit funny.

Dumb suspension IMO, but they've really been looking for a reason to suspend him for awhile now.

I found it hilarious. It was premediatated. The NHL polices itself and is probably the most fan-friendly sport with good guys. The Stars messed up with signing him. He fit in well with NY and made a difference for that team. Next time the Stars play Calgary if he's in the lineup probably won't end good for Avery.

Avery's antics overshadow that he is a pretty good player.
